Smith system will tell you to stay in the right lane because you never want a vehicle to get into your blind zone on a right turn .
It is easier to move a car out of your way if he is on your left side in a right turn than it is to get one out of your blind space before you hit him on your right side.
I have done it this way for 34 years and it has always worked for me.
I am sure they have a better way to do it now that you need a school and all this great training that the new guys get today .
Oh and by the way it is stay in the right lane on a left turn again to keep the other guy out of your blind spot .
So the answer is the same for both turns in a 2 turn lane situation .
Stay in the right lane .
Keep the other guy on your drivers side so you can keep your eye on him at all times .\
Once again just the way that I have done it for years so it probably wrong .
right hand turning when there are two right turn lanes?

Funny thing one night at my first stop in Chinatown. There was "emergency construction" going on. There was the tightest squeeze for me ever. I had to climb the traffic island, and the cop's personal SUV was parked ON that traffic island. I got nearly bumper to bumper, then got off the island, I had no room to get off that island sooner.
The next night? There was still ongoing emergency construction.
That cop's personal SUV?
Was parked way further down that traffic island! I saw him both nights, the first night, he could in no way, run to his car fast enough. The second night? I blew the air horn, and he waved at me! Funny Boston coppers.! The 3rd night, he was on duty, (cop car duty) and came to my stop off. He said, "hey bro, I ain't never seen a trucker take that tight turn like you those past nights".
I said, "I wasn't expecting an SUV dinner"!plankton and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this. -

Yes, the "couple of absolutes" are:
1) you will get hired
2) you will get fired.
anything in between these 2?
simply doesn't matter!Brickwall Thanks this. -

Left turns you are on the outer lane. Right turns you are on the inner lane. If your right turn will drag your trailer around the curve then pivot on the area your tandems will swing on the trailer. If this puts the tractor into an oncoming lane they will back up. A lot of city drivers will move the tandems forward to make the right turns easier.

Hey guys I am new to the TTR forum and I just took my road test on Sunday. I live in Michigan and by the book you are taught to turn from the right lane of the two right lanes. The reasoning for this is because people on your left would not just turn into your trailer while you are steadily going straight to make the turn but if you are in the left lane and while your trailer is off tracking people will try to turn under it. If you get into this type of accident I am told it will be considered your fault because trailer hit them because you were in the left of the two lanes.

Now that you passed that test, take that CDL manual, and when you are on the road, and come to a rest area and use the toilet and there is no toilet paper? That manual can go a long long way in wiping you.
What I am saying, is that out there, we just have to do, what is necessary to get the job done. Circumstances dictate what we must do to accomplish that. No one wants to break the laws, but no one wants an accident either. I am not disrespecting you, but you ain't seen nothing yet, and you certainly will in due time. If say I was to ever get a ticket, I think lane violation? then I'd rather have that, then all the paper work for an accident, drug screening, maybe a loss of a job.
Again, I really do THANK YOU for telling us (and me) what the book says, and I wish you all the utmost best in your new career.!
But save that book, you never know when you need toilet paper!!KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
I use a 359 Pete to pull a 53 ft double drop with a 60 in spread and a 53 ft wheelbase around NY, PA, CT quite a bit....so that takes a bit of room.
You have to button hook and use the LH lane no doubt about that. The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the tractor should be already back into the RH lane as your trailer is leaving the RH lane. This way the cars won't be able to run up your RH side.
