Having worked for all of the "top ten" truckload carriers...my opinion is
they are ALL a ripoff and the driver is merely a slave for them to
use/abuse and discard. The mentality at Admin Level is much like the
Bank Bailout recipients......the owners, share holders etc care ZERO about
the worker...but why should they? They want MONEY...so there is really ZERO connection between the "bosses" from dispatch to Owners....and
the slaveboy they employ at will. no Union, No Pension, No legal representation in case of "trouble" while motoring for them...ZERO.
Similar to fast food biz. Driver is an expendible nobody. Always has been this way...always will be this way. A driver is better off in some ways Owning His Own Truck and Buisness......he can take care of himself in all matters because the "Corporation" really is not in business of doing anything for anybody other than the Owners.

What guy doesn't understand, is you have to put on your time with starter company before you can get a good job.

Yes I'm a union driver. But there a bunch of good non union companies out there.

But this guy doesn't stick around long enough with a starter company to get a good job,

    GROW UP DUDE!!!

    Uh, stoney.
It is possible to get a good job without having to go with a "starter" company. You just have to have the drive to get out and work the pavement, for that good job.
Also, what one might consider a good job is just trash work to another. So its all about the perspective of the person doing the job.

Well if you burn your bridges behind you who is going to hire you but the big outfits? The good company's can pick and choose who they want to hire and do not have to do cattle calls each week to fill their rigs.

Each driver should look in the mirror and say would I hire me if I did not really need to fill a seat but was looking to expand or upgrade my employee pool?

The fact that so many company's took a chance on you shows they only cared about getting that mty rig on the road.

True I did that starting out as a dock worker at Viking. But if you go to a cdl school the 30 day clock is ticking and despite your best efforts you may be forced to go to a starter company.

Lack of finances usually speeds the clock up even more. I have had trainees i had to feed till they got enough time on the truck to get a advance becuase they where totally broke by the time they reached the truck. And thats how the big company's like them, broke and desperate.
