Sounds like PUCO strikes again! Great people in Ohio, but go around it if you can.

With an open MC, I rented an F150 pickup truck from Turo car sharing. I went to NY and picked up my wrecked pickup truck and trailer. At what point did my trip become commercial?
When I got behind the wheel of an empty pickup truck and drove from Texas to New York or when I hitched a trailer with a wrecked truck to it?

In this case I woulda left and got back to my trip home as soon as the cop left and the coast was clear. No way I’d sit oos for 10 hrs on something that is in no way worthy of a violation.

So you had a wrecked 3/4 ton dodge on a trailer behind a 1/2 ton Ford. Did the officer check any of the weights? I bet you got off lucky with only being oss for a 10. The Dot's job is to in force the law, the weather doesn't care about laws and dot doesn't care about weather. You chose to leave when you did, you could have gotten a hotel and waited out the storm.

Good point about the weather. With the forecasting tools available there's really no excuse to get caught out.
On the violation itself....Some people do everything but hang out a "Stop me. Committing several violations" sign. The Highway Patrol looks for things like the OP was doing. They see literally thousands of vehicles every day. If you pull their focus you can bet you've done something to earn the attention.

No, the overall weight was fine and the DOT checked it exactly. Towing GVWR F150 Hybrid - 15 000
