Road Service or Highway Robbery?

    I must say I do not have to deal with these people but I hear the horror stories of driver's having to with them. I placed a driver out of service the other day for brake linings on the trailer being inadequate, all 4 brake linings were completely gone, metal to metal and it had ruined the drums as well. The driver came in a few hours later after road service made the repairs, new drums, new shoes and $2000.00 later wanted me to lock the guy up. Granted it seemed like a hefty price to me but what do I know. Unfortunately that is a contact the two parties entered into and is a civil matter. I was wondering if this happens all over the country or if this was one of those deals. wondering what road repair companies are the best and the worst?

    Drums could run up to $125 each, brake box in the area of $50 each. Assuming roughly $800 in parts the rest is mark up and labor.


    Yes road service is highway robbery. The reason being is the road service providers know that you will pay it because you have no where else to go. In your case the driver was OOS. WHERE was he going to get a better rate?

    Road service is a tough game. All your overhead is on the other side of the 800.00 buck
    parts tab and no matter what you try to shave for customer; you,
    (The Guy to get up at 3:30 AM in the snowstorm for a rescue,)
    are the bad guy. I've let people pay partial and held their (whatever,)
    like a sucker for collateral, and I still have it. I'm no softie for a sob story,
    but enough was enough and gave it up. I just tow now. Period.
    In an emergency the guy with the shop and tools makes the rules.
    I always Made it a point to make 'em leave happy.

    My company does a good job keeping our equipment in good shape so I wouldn't know about that level of repair. What minor jobs I have had done on the road were reasonable as far as I can remember and some ballpark figure was agreed upon between my shop manager and the repair outfit before the work was performed.
