Rock ate into the tire to the belt

    Rock drilling. Common if you get into gravel. Some tires are worse than others. I'm in my second set of Hankooks and they collect rocks like crazy. Yes it will get casings rejected. Never seen a tire blow from it. Or seen a mto/dot question it. If you're really worried about it some sort of liquid rubber to deal it will make you feel better till it falls out in a few hundred miles. Its about as effective as digging rocks out with a pick.

    Correct. Run that tire it will wear out from old age. Cap time, or trade in value will be compromised like special-k says. Thats my experience with tires. Sure it may rust a bit but not fast enough that it wont wear out first. Actually never have blown a tire out through the tread. Sidewalls blow out. Anything can happen, but it ain't happened to me yet, in 45 years.

    I had that happen once on a brand new Yoko steer. Not as bad as yours though. I ran it anyways for quite a while, without a problem.
