How far back does Roehl check Criminal Background for felonies? Do they check all states or just the ones you’ve lived?
I had a recruiter check mine and it came back with nothing on it; but I have a felony from 1993. Convicted in 1994 and spent 3.5 years incarcerated. Will they do a more thorough search during orientation and this appear? I’m just curious because I filled out the application and checked no for the “have you been convicted of a felony” question.
Please advise?

You might luck out and Roehl not find out, but doubtful.
Many companies don't care about that as long as you're truthful about it on the application.
Some applications ask "Have you ever?" and some "Have you within the last XYZ years?"
Which state do you live in; there's plenty of other companies to choose from if Roehl rejects your application.
Millis Transfer hires felons and ex-cons for their cdl school and they're a decent company.FTE_lenny Thanks this. -
If you are in fact a convicted felon somewhere which you stated you have been and have served time for it it's going to be found out eventually. When it does, you have just lost your job, told to find your own way home wherever you happen to be at at that moment.
Now... when you get into certain time frames far enough back, I get shaky. Certain felony crimes related to theft in particular and other more serious ones will not get you a trucking job.
I hate to be difficult. But if you have been convicted and you checked no, you pretty much assured that you will lose your job and that will be entered into your DAC against you among other things.
It's better to be up front. Maybe it's far enough back, maybe it's not something to be concerned with, that is up to the employer. It is way way way better to clear the air about it upfront than to check that no box and then sign that application falsely.
When I attended school there were 22 of us. 21 of us got Class A's 5 of whom were felons. 4 happened to be women and three were starting over from previous trucking... not necessarily any gender being a felon in particular. That far back it's common for one who served time to get into trucking or something similar to make a new start to rebuild life in the free world. One of my close buddies during school happened to have been in prision among other things. But he served his time and he's out free and so far not a problem. That was a long time ago, he turned into a pretty durn good driver.
Things have changed quite a lot since then what with big databases being tied together coast to coast as I write this.
So you better talk to someone before you actually go to orientation. Being found out during orientation and sent home is enough in some fleets to make you not hireable to others. Maybe for years. Maybe ever. Or worst, found out by happenstance in the state you are being inspected at DOT scale while they run your license and check.
Another BIG BIG thing about felons these days is Canada. Thats out. Some companies live and die via Canada. If it is discovered at the Peace Bridge you did in fact have a felony and refused entry at detriot-winsdor you would have to inform your boss who probably will have to fire you.
Follow me?
I am not your opponet. You served time, you were punished, it's over. Done water under the bridge. I don't care about that. What I do care about is you checking that no box when you said that you have been convicted... that is what will get you.Last edited: Apr 10, 2018
born&raisedintheusa, FTE_lenny and Puppage Thank this. -
You checked NO. Didn’t feel like it was their business.

Thank you for the replies. The problem is, I’ve already been through the application process and have a date to start orientation. Before the recruiter scheduled my physical,, she called me and told me that I had passed the background check. I don’t know at this point what I should do. I was incarcerated from 1993-1997 so we are talking 25 years ago and I reside in a different state now. My question now is, Does Roehl do more than 1 criminal background check? Because when I originally did the application, it took a few weeks for my criminal background check to come back and we couldn’t move forward until it did and like I said before it came back clear. I’m just concerned at this point that they will do another check.

Maybe @Ridgeline can offer insight on this.
I'd be tempted to go ahead and follow through with the company and just gamble. You might have a problem if they want you to go to Canada. Have you been to Canada since release? -
Well.. I suppose that's it then.
Get everything in writing. Keep everything you sign at orientation etc. Remember you can also request in writing everything Roehl used to make a decision on your employment. Store it for the time being. -

What I should have said is that best of luck to you. Keep all records of this pending hire on you can in writing with copies etc. Most companies provide in writing all information pulled on you when making a employment decision. And there you will see the extent of the Background done on you.
Does this help? I wish you best of luck and it's alot of changes since my day out there now. So just be careful and look out for yourself and your CDL. What with the current things one has to go through to possess a CDL, Im pretty sure that you are not the problem with your history. It's the employer who has to decide. And sometimes it does not go well.
