I bet your head is spinning....local or regional. If it was me i would probably pick the local especially if the terminal is close and it keeps you close to family. If you like the open road then choose regional. But it can get lonely out there.
-
Yes my head is spinning.
Pros of local company
- Terminal in my town
- Closed on weekends
- Insurance from day 1
- Not having to deal with mountains in the winter (stay in Wi, MN, IL)
- No chance to leave the area
- more physical labor involved
- Home for reset every week
- keep my truck
- VA tax free money
- Always able to switch back and forth from regional to OTR including Canada
- Can switch from reefer to van to flatbed anytime I want
- No guarantee of weekends home
- Sleeping in the truck 5 nights a week
- Locked in to 75,000 miles or else penalty
With Roehl I like that I can do Regional during the winter and switch to OTR the rest of the year if I want. I also like that I can switch to a dedicated hometime (14/7, 7/7, 7/4 7/3) anytime I want as well.
I had a 3rd option of going with Sysco but it was my least favorite option and pretty much ruled it out unless the other 2 fall through for some reason. -
I have to admit that going 'over the road' is an adventure, seeing the country and 'camping out' in a diffrent place every night. It was alot of fun when my wife rode with me the first few years.
-
I have pulled my camper from one side this country to the other. I absolutely LOVE being on the road. If I was single I would find a national carrier and live in my truck full time. I lived in my camper for a little over a year and didn't mind it one bit so the confined space is not an issue for me. The biggest downside for me is I am a tourist. It would be very hard for me to have to drive past things to stay on schedule when normally I have to stop at every spot that catches my eye.
-
There will be plenty of times when you will have time to stop and spend a little time in interesting locations.
-
I'd do the local gig. If the va is paying for your school you don't have a 75,000 contract, you can quit anytime
-
Well with Roehl they require the 75,000 miles for new drivers who already have a CDL and 120,000 miles for new drivers who they have to train.
I do already have my CDL so I am on the hook for the 75,000 miles.
My fear is that I don't go with Roehl and then the local job doesn't end up coming together and I am without either one. Unless the local gig offers me a job before Monday I am going to take the job with Roehl. -
Don't let them 1099 you.
-
Hey Nate. I was going to sign up with Roehl until I heard about that 75l contract. Was planning on doing Flatbed with them. Wonder how many miles they get?
