unless you are there...thats my point,if you hit mirrors you got evidence..but if you put it in the ditch with no other trucks around, safety can say," oh yea sure driver you moved to not hit mirriors, but we think you fell asleep behind the wheel"..I was taught to always hold your lane as much as possible and brace for impact..Of course I will move to aviod a head on..but those are very rare to happen..

Glad no one got hurt. Don't think your career is over though, unless you can't pee in a cup. That's worse than murder.

Now that does suck. But the main thing is you're alright. In this case to be honest with you it doesn't look too favorable your boss will keep you. He'll probably mark this as a preventable and use the reason because you knew it was bad and still drove in it rather then finding a safe haven.Companies are like that, they use what I just said as a defense but yet get that load delivered no matted what the road conditions are.Its a no win situation. But very much doubt this will keep you from getting hired elsewhere.
Chewy352 and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
You're right...out in west Texas they're posted at 75mph. Sounds fast... until you're out there and drive for a couple hours and don't see a single soul.

What will matter is whether or not your company rules the accident to have been preventable or not. This will come down to your being able to prove that there were two trucks coming at you. Did the kind officer make out a report that mentions the other trucks? If he did you are golden as taking the ditch to avoid a head on is the correct thing to do. If he didn't, you will be fired for having a preventable accident. Your safety guy will not buy the other vehicle excuse. The good news is that 1 preventable will not keep you from being hired by another company. Most allow 2 in a three year period. And the better news is that working for anyone other then CR England is considered a step up.
My guess is that you had your cruise control on an lost control of you truck when your tires spun out. Not calling you a liar but your safety guy will be thinking the same thing.Chewy352 Thanks this. -
Well luckly we have plenty of drivers driving that road every day all day that can confirm the conditions. Also the trooper that investigated could tell by my tire tracks that I was awake and not distracted. He said he worked a rollover a few weeks ago where he knew the driver fell asleep because the tracks went straight away from the roadway for quite a ways. That driver did get cited. I see the whole event as a perfect stom though. My rookie mistake combined with adverse weather conditions and bad road. Any one of them removed and It could have been avoided.
Thank you for your response.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Its all about reducing/limiting risk.
I'd rather of been late.......

Here is a street view of the speed limit for those doubters. This section has a little bit of a shoulder.

I lost it just before this and came to a stop just before that electic pole. The ditch is hard to see because the grass is not mowed but it is very soft ground.

As for it being preventable. Unless a car or tuck comes straight at you the vast majority of accidents are preventable. Of the preventable accidents we also have accidents and negligence. I and the trooper agree this was an accident. Was it preventable? Yes. I could have not gone out that night but then again it wasn't bad when I left that night and hoped I would stay ahead of the storm. Could I have taken US 75 south to OK 11 to I 244 to I 44 to joplin? Yes. Could I have held my ground and clipped mirrors? Yes. Lots of things I could have done differently. I also don't blame England if they fire me after all I just cost them approx. 100k. I hope that they see it as an accident though and give me another chance because I know how I drive and although I make rookie mistakes I don't do anything that comes close to negligence.popcorn169 and 123456 Thank this. -
Oklahoma is a state that don't have a lot of snow plows and will clear the main drags first like the interstates..US 60 is a nice highway, taken it many times but not if its snowing.Where exactly on 60 did this happen and where was you heading?.Next time going thru Oklahoma in bad weather, stay away from all highways. They'll be the last to get cleared. The interstates aren't much better but at least you can see something. When you can't keep a nice speed like at least 50 then its time to find the next safe haven and call it a day. You're not gaining any miles anyway. Not worth it.Who cares if your dispatcher tries to be intimidating. You're the one out there not him or her.Stand your ground and give him a firm solid no and hang up if they won't settle for a no.
Chewy352 Thanks this. -
Lane control is critical on these narrow roads with no shoulder, you really have to be on top of your game. Add the wind and the vortex coming off those oncoming trucks and that's a real challenge.
Good that you survived, OP.
Many will be the time when running OTR you won't know what kind of road you are going to be on before you get there. If I'm routed off freeways I try to get on Google Maps and look at the road before going, but that's not always possible. Running these roads when you need to also find a place to park for a 30 or a 10 can be a difficult.
So you found yourself in a highly difficult situation, and smartly reduced speed to 55 in the 65. In retrospect I think slowing even more when you had the oncoming trucks would also have been good, and brace yourself for that sudden burst of wind from the trucks as they came by, maybe even start steering back for the center as the 2nd truck is passing you.
Good luck and keep us posted regarding your job with CRE.
