If you're in it for the money, then stay LTL.

Thats what I keep being told! That theres 'no money' in otr. Truth be told, the starting wage I'm at right now aint enough for my bills if I was on a straight 40hr week. I need the OT for the first couple years until I hit the higher rates.

Seems like you already understand how it has to work. Don't worry about the experience, because in a month of LTL you will gain more knowledge than a year in OTR. Take your time, dont let anyone push you, and ask questions. LTL city driving can be a fast pace high stress job for an experienced driver, let alone a fresh new driver. So if it feels difficult, that's because it is, haha.

Bean Jr. and coastietruckin' Thank this.

Keep in mind that UPSF isn't known to hire new students. Nor do they have any in-house training program or dock to driver program like a lot of other LTL companies have. They most likely don't have any qualified instructors to train new students because of this. This whole process of hiring new students is probably a new thing that they never had to deal with, and it most likely will change in the future if they do intend to start hiring new students...because it seems like they're they're training you like an experienced driver who wants to learn how to do the job...and not as someone who wants to learn how to drive.

Get to know your shop steward. Talk to him about your situation and and keep in touch with him on your progress. He may be able to help create a Local Agreement specifically for new students if UPSF intends to hire new students. Union may create a protocal where they create a dock to driver program or have they're own in-house driving school like UPS Parcel has to become a Feeder Driver.

Good luck and stick it out. Because once you quit UPS...you normally can NEVER come back.

While its great to ask for advice what your really wanting from us is to help you make up your mind? Only you can really tell what you want with us we don't really know you and what would really suit you ? What goal did you have in mind when you first obtained your CDL ? If your thinking of doing OTR keep in mind you have to get used to driving for long very long hours day after day week after week. Are you capable of doing that? Second getting to your delivery destination on time. after unloading being able to reload and get back to your return destination on time etc etc. And this goes on and on and on and on. and so forth and its the major reason why there is a huge driver shortage cause not many people can do this day after day after day. and on and on and on.
