Boy, do I feel like an idiot. I've been at it for 3 years... Still considered a rookie by some. I consider myself a safe operator. I do my best to make sure my load is safe and secure, but this time I screwed the pooch. It's common trucker knowlege is to refuse any load that you believe is unfit to roll down the road. Well, this time I picked up a load of 5" drill pipe out of Houston bound for the northern Alberta oil patch. I had 4 tiers of pipe separated by dunnage, with 4 extra pipe sitting on the top tier that WAS NOT separated by dunnage. I called the boss man and told him I wanted to stick some wood under the 4 pipe so it was separated. He basically called me an idiot and told me to giver down the highway. So I got a 3rd opinion from an old timer. He told me it was good to go. Wellllllll I figured these boys must know their stuff, being million milers and all.... Turns out the rookie was right on this one. I hit the scale in Huntsville, TX and they decided to give this Alberta boy a level 1. I keep my rig tip-top, so I wasn't too worried. They ended up giving me a 150$ ticket for an insecure load. They said that because all the pressure of my top straps were only securing the 4 pipe on top, I had 10 pipe that had no downward pressure; making them insecure. My boss plans to "fight that chicken-eatin' scaleman in court".... But the ticket is under my name. I guess all I'm sayin here is NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS, do your thing and do it right. And for the know it all bosses out there? Listen to Hank when he says "mind yer own business and ya won't be mindin mine" stay safe, drivers.

First question you should ask yourself, regardless what shape your trailer or what you're hauling is this:

Will the driver you're asking your question to help you pay the ticket if you take their opinion and it is wrong?? Granted you figured you're doing the right and safe thing, and it could have been chance you got pulled into the weigh station AND get pulled around the back.

I'm not going to call it a rookie mistake, because even vet drivers (obviously) have or could do the exact thing you've done, AND got away with it....but everybody has their day. that day just happened to have been your day. You learn by your mistakes....

The scale/DOT guy was right, but, I'm curious, did he let you go on your way with this "unsecured" load ?

    rambler and Wargames Thank this.

Yes, sir. There you go. Today, a load of pipe flipped off a deck on Industrial in Houston. Nice 2 hr wait for everyone. Glad I could get into my delivery place on the wrong side of the road about 100 yds.

Pipe is horrible. Pipe is dangerous. It has a huge responsibility to the driver. You, sir, have the right pipe securement. I've carried many a different size, steel, FBE, and PVC. You have to work with the loaders, they will listen about that dunnage....Make it right or leave it there.

It's your load to haul. You go with your gut. You had it right. I'm sorry you got a ticket. Please follow up. I had a flatspot on a front axle of a spread, owner said run it back so their tire guy could do it. I signed the ticket. Asked the TX DOT what happens now? He said, "Give it to your company, they own the trailer". Guess what? I got the notice, ticket not paid, deadline, pay now or face license suspension. I paid. Hard lesson. I'm glad you knew it wasn't right. Listen to NoTarps about the belly and anchor straps, too....keep that freight on the deck!!!!!

Possibly a one post drive by. All the time and trouble to join the forum just to post this experience. You can't take people word for safety issues..and you mentioned you are safety conscious.
