I got my CDL yesterday, and I'm shipping off to CRST on Sunday. What should I pack? What's a good "essentials kit" for the OTR life?

Cloth sleeping bag
enough clothing for 10 days on the road (3 pants, 10 shirts underwear pairs of socks) clean stuff that you would go on a date with, yet dont mind getting dirt on.
tooth paste and tooth brush, a microfiber towel (dries quicker) soap
safety tread shoes.
this all needs to fit in a collapsible bag, remember space is limited.
tablet or smart phone if you have family to keep in contact with. Avoid using wifi's in truckstops. There are haxors out there.

There is info on threads posted here on what new drivers should pack. Just do a little searching, you'll find them. Lot of info in them. Good Luck.

Go pack packing for a week. Pack what you need, leave the rest at home. Shirts, shoes, tooth brush Please, and undies. The rest is up to you,

mje, Saddletramp1200, BronzeLion and 1 other person Thank this. -
Spare pillow case for dirty laundry. Reason I say 3 pairs pants, think about it, your wearing one pair, another pair might be in the dirty laundry, oh you just walked by a cattle trailer and your now covered is cow whiz. Nice to know you still have that third pair of pants. Also avoid walking near cattle trailers, those cows like to baptize people foolish enough to walk by.

Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh. Pack enough stuff for a week. Make sure you have some cash, or a card at your disposal, as it may be rough for a bit. You're going to have to hope you get a good lead driver that will treat you fairly and actually teach you some stuff. Alot of them just wait to find out if you can shift and keep the truck between the lines (somewhat), then just run like a team for your 28 days or so. Once you're done with that, you'd better hope you find a decent co-driver that you can get along with. Otherwise you'll be repeating the try outs until you find one. And whatever you do, don't get any tickets or accidents or they'll terminate your contract and come after you for the $$$ (what is it, like $4000 or so?), at least that's what I witnessed. I had to leave them because I couldn't keep running my shift and half of my co-driver's (he couldn't back up,or route plan, and only had a temporary license - so I had to run the hazmat loads by myself - andhe still got paid half the miles, etc.). Good luck to you.cjwatson1972 Thanks this. -
Driver, let that girl control your truck. You do the driving. You won't regret it.

An oversize sleeping bag. Running teams, sheets aren't practical. When it's your time to drive, roll up the sleeping bag and put it away.
Baby wipes.
Flip Flops for use in truckstop showers.Truckergirl0720 and lovesthedrive Thank this.
