Hello everyone. Great website. My question as a new graduate is, what companies run the 48 states, would hire a newbie and has a good reputation. I am leaning towards flatbed but that's not too important cause i just want to get 1-2 years experience OTR. I live in the Raleigh NC area, not too worried about home-time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I'm concerned about with your question is frame of reference, or in your case lack thereof.

You say you're "not too worried about hometime". With a company that runs all 48 you could very well be out for months at a stretch.

With flatbed though it may not be that way. That's the route I would go if I were in your position.

Howard Transportation in Kenly hires new CDL grads. Check the website; flatbed with good reputation.

    Melton Truck Lines
    Navajo Express
    Watkins-Shepard
    WLA Inc.
    Cooke Trucking Co.
    Hardy Bros. Inc.
    Inman Trucking Co.
    Trimac - Durham-reimbursement for tanker/hazmat endorsements
    Southern Refrigerated Transport

There's more. All these have online applications and hire new CDL graduates, even if the website says "experience required."

I'm thinking 4-6 weeks wouldn't be a problem at all. In a year or two I'd like to find a place to call home and be more concerned with home time. Thing is most of the places I'm applying to seems they just run east coast and I figure I'd like to see the entire country even Canada. I'm kinda pressed for time to make a decision, a week or two max. If anyone could point me in the right direction (what companies to look at) that would be great.

    They're 48 state carriers.
Trimac might be iffy for back to back stuff.
I understand Howard is registered for 48 states but does mostly 32 states on a regular basis. Seems like I remember one of their drivers posting that recently. Submit an application and follow with a phone call and ask, if that's a concern to you.

I'd put Prime at the top of the list. Best pay you're going to find for a greenhorn straight out of school, and the drivers I've talked to are very happy there. They have a flatbed division, and a very active forum here on TTR.

I've heard positive things about SRT and Roehl, but I haven't done a lot of research on them.

And don't write off Swift. Yes, they're at the bottom of the pay scale when you start out, but they give frequent raises, and they're right up there with everyone else at one year experience. On the plus side, because of their size, they generally have freight for you.

Disclosure: I drive for Swift. I went through their Academy, with the intention of jumping to another company once I got the six months' experience they required. That was nearly a year ago. I'm happy here.
