My father in law has been asked to run bobtail from STL to Columbia, MO to pick up a trailer then come back to STL. He us supposed to go on Friday. He hasnt had to bobtail in ages and is curious to know if he has to pull into the scale house if it is open. I ran bobtail to KC once but luckly both scale houses were closed and I didnt have to find out. Does anybody know about this?

Yes, He will need to enter a scale house if it is open.
stlwaco Thanks this. -
Yes you do have to go into the scale. if you dont go in it will cost you around 200 dollars. Been there done that...
stlwaco Thanks this. -
yes go into the scale, some states require vehicles exceeding gross weight XYZ to enter and that goes by what the truck is licensed to haul not what your pulling.
stlwaco Thanks this. -
Let me throw a "what if" question into this ...
So long as you're not under dispatch (say on your way to TAH), you can log bobtail driving as "off duty"
In that case, would entering the scales still be required? -
seems to me if you are off duty, the tractor is under 26k lbs, the truck is then your personal vehicle for private use. You do not even need a CDL nor to cross scales. (I think lol)..Obviously its probably much safer to just drive down the mpty lane & back on the highway. Just wonderin what others think about the private vehicle for personal use. Does it stand up?
-
It is not the actual weight of the tractor. If the GVWR is 26,0001 pounds or more, you must have a CDL, and you must cross the scales. Now I suppose you could drive a tractor bobtail with a class B licence, as it has no trailer.

don't pull into the scales and let me know how much that ticket is..thanks

we have to take our f350's in. even when we are not pulling our trailers. and we have to keep the log books up to date.
