I went out and got a K40 Open helicoil antenna 18 foot of coax and mount to put it outside on the mirror arm. But when I pulled the back off the mirror I discovered the antenna running through the arm and because of the size of the connector and the wires were all taped together so even if the connector was small enough my idea of using the original to pull the new one through, it wouldn't have worked. I tried taking various parts of the dash out but I don't want to mess anything up. Is there an easier way or do I need to search out a cb tech at a truck stop. 2012 International Prostar if you haven't already guessed. Seems every search result comes back with the problems encountered with this particular truck.
Running coax from mirror mount

If you are going to run it in place of the factory stuff, you'll have to cut the connector off and have it reattached after you run it. Can you run it into the engine compartment then thru the firewall. That's what most are doing on the Cascadia.
jessejamesdallas Thanks this. -
Thought about that. Obviously don't want to run it where it would get pinched. So just cut the one end off and get a new connector to crimp back on after I run it?

My does but my is and old K-40. -
I find coax with copper shielding works the best.
Any alumni shielding is usually cheep junk(my opinion)
Ground wires are a must, not every part of the truck is grounded and you need good grounds to have a good system.
Remember that a magnet mount need a good base with high iron content to stick too, if you cab body is alumni with no iron in it, it is not going to stick at all.
You may have to bolt on a iron or steel plate and ground it to the battery directly if worse comes to worse.
It is very important the SWR low as possible and below 1, 2 is a sign of danger, anything past 3 and you could pop a component on the board on you radio not work any more.Last edited: May 18, 2015
darthanubis and ladyfire Thank this. -
Had a friend tell me to cut one end off then after running it simply attach another connector. Sounds easy enough but if this stuff is anything like running coax for tv at the house I have a problem making sure the crimp is good and will hold. I figured the ground is good I found the wire hooked into old mount and there is enough excess to bring it up to put on new mount. Even if not should be able to run a jumper. If so would gauge of wire play a factor for the jumper?

You need to let somebody (cbshop) install the PL259 properly. It should involve solder.
darthanubis, EHB and Bout Z Thank this. -
Yeah I have been told that. Don't want to mess up anything. I could do it but I would be afraid of not getting a good solder on the connection.

Adding the jumper into the mix could also mess things up as well when you are talking about antenna's as it could actually raise your SWR. Would be better to cut off and have a new end put on. Also remember the shorter the length of wire with some service slack from antenna to CB the better as having excess length will raise the SWR as well.
