    I have a problem with a 2006 volvo 780 with a ved12 and I'm looking for some help.
The truck takes 30 minutes to move the temp gauge off the peg at idle. Then when I drive down the road it runs at 170 degrees not 195 degrees where it used to. If I idle the truck for 15 mins after running the truck for 2 hours it will go to 210 degrees and the fan kicks on cools it to 195 and then it stays at 195 until I start down the road and it drops to 170 and stays there till I stop then it goes to 195 after idling for 15 mins.
I had the dealer put a new thermostat in and it did not change anything so I put a winter front on and block of all air to the motor and it stayed at 170 degrees with no air cooling the motor!
I took it to a garage and they plugged it in and tested the gauge. the gauge reads 170 and so did the computer. The truck ran great and I was getting 7.6 MPG that dropped to 6.5 when it started to run cold.

What would make a ved12 run cold?

    any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Sure they put right temperature of thermostat back in?. New one could also be faulty and hung open or installed wrong

When it is really cold outside you will need a belly tarp, you secure it under the radiator so no air gets thru, and secure it to the frame on both sides at least 1/2 way down the transmission. What that does is keep all the heat posible in the engine.
You are loosing a lot of fuel milage any time the engine is below 195 degrees and the oil temp is below 200 F.
This is the type of thing you need in continuous cold weather I Learned this in 13.5 years in Edmonton Alberta. You want good quality Canvass, about three inches wider than from the frame to frame mounting points at the oil pan.
    Just a thought!

Cold weather will drop mpg by 1 mpg. bib or not, cold air still cools engine more when moving.

    Thanks for the help.
If they put the thermostat in wrong would it stay at 170?
How cold does it have to be to use a belly tarp? It was above 30 when this started.
    Thanks again.

Look, you only need a belly tarp if you're running extreme cold for an extended period of time, 20 - 30 below for the season. These things are designed now to run without a winter front, shutters, and /or cardboard. What you have is just something stupid, thermostat, sensor, gauge, something wacky. Belly tarp, geez.

Would I know about a belly tarp if I was on here looking for a pizza? Think about it.
