Ginna run the entire 80 starting in a while. Just picked up some chains from the shop (not that I know how to use them) but I got them.
I know donners on 80 any other of the "scary" mountians? I'm expecting to have 40k in the box and just want some advise on the more western part of 80.
Also a wind question, ive seen some threads lately about the winds out in like Wyoming and what not, but can anyone give me some weight numbers on the light high profile adviserys? 40k isn't light but im thinking possibly might be use full info coming back
Oh also if it helps I'm heading to los Gatos ca

All I can tell you is that Wyoming is windy every time I've been there. Not nice lift breezes either. If a storm comes through Wyoming there is a good chance of i80 being shut down. Take your time and have fun.
S M D Thanks this. -
If you had less than 30k on, you might get real tense across Wyoming if the wind is blowing on the "high side".
Donner would likely be your biggest concern but if you happen to be in Wyoming or Utah or Nevada at the same time a significant system was coming through, you may run across some "chains required" signs. But in the coming week across 80 you should not have any icy roads to contend with.

I've seen this before about Wyoming and all I can think of is this.
Raezzor, itaff, Pete jockey and 6 others Thank this. -
The no ice makes me happy. This is some good miles 2700+ so I'm not afraid to park and wait.
Won't lie, I'm kinda nervous about running 80. Only been to so cal twice and both of those times was at swift in my mentors truck. So this is my longest solo run I've ever done.
I also plan to listen to the signs. I run alot of pocanoes and Allegheny mountains so steep do t bother me but if i remember reading correctly the mountains out west are long and steep.
Haven't been west in a while and only been northern west once before -
Are you going to LA? If so why not push south?

A few "hills" in Wyoming. A pretty good pull and drop at Parleys east of SLC. few hills in Nevada. And Donner. Donner really isn't as bad as the signage would indicate. The steepest parts are relatively short in length. Just don't get too confident too soon that the grade is over.
Parleys requires as much care as Donner, if not more.Boattlebot and DTP Thank this. -
Never mind I reread. Lol

Good idea to keep the tanks full on a run like this? I don't think I'll have an issue balancing this load with full tanks so probably a decent idea to keep the truck full?
At thisnpiont I'm kinda just thinking aloudShock Therapy Thanks this.
