I had an interesting conversation with another driver early this morning. We were both picking up at the same place for our next loads. The Tyson in Olathe, Ks. He asked what route I was going to take. I said 35 down to OKC to 40 to 15. He was taking 54 to 40 to 15 because it was the shortest route and Google maps said it was 30min faster.

I argued that my route was actually the faster of the two and the most fuel efficient. He asked me how and I said because I don't have slow down for every small town between here and Tucumcari. Most likely you won't even make Tucumcari in one driving period and I don't care that Google maps says it's only 591 miles and will take 9 hours and 51 mintues. Google maps estimates that around 65mph and there is no way you are going to average 65mph on that route. At least on my route I don't have to slow down below 62mph unless for construction and therefore I can make better time and better fuel efficiency vs. stop and go for every little town and God forbid you get stuck behind a 55mph Prime truck coming out of Dodge City.

He didn't believe me and going to run that route anyway. Hey, I tried.

I actually prefer to take 54 I know the difference however I like the route. I also hate the traffic on okc and the small towns have better food stops :)

The traffic in OKC ain't bad if you take the turn pike around from 35 to 40.

Yes, it is a good scenic route, but I personally don't like having to slow down for every small town along 54. I will agree that the food is better, but I personally weather get the better fuel economy.

The main thing I didn't understand about this guy's choice was that he had told me that he was all about fuel economy on his truck, but chooses to run the less fuel efficient route.

Yeah I don't get that either. I ran from that Tyson to the tucumcary loves had 58 mins left on my 11 I was 8 mins to short for the loves on exit 277 but that was my fault I pulled off for like 5 minutes and forgot to take myself out of drive line. Still was a day early for drop at Costco is tollson az.

I have done it also, but it was overnight and no traffic. During the day and you can very easily run out of time.

I will need fuel soon and figure I would get the cheap fuel in Edmond, Ok.

But still, if are going to say you are all about the mpg, shouldn't you run the route that will give the best mpg?

I looked at the route on Google maps and there is only a 30min difference between the two on favor of 54. So with all the slow downs on 54, the time is a wash anyway.
