i started on England local intermodal out of Mira Loma, ca. 3 1/3 years ago. it was very good, paid by the load and length of load. had a great planner and dispatcher. there was 8 drivers and we were kicking butt averaging 4 to 5 loads a day at $11-1200 take home per week. after about 1 1/2 yr they decided to move the planner and dispatcher to another division. new planner was very inexperienced, had us driving in circles. appt times to close or 6 to 8 hrs apart. load count fell as did our paychecks. competitors took some out customers which got us even slower. so the powers that be decided to hire 40 new drivers. yup, that's forty. got down to one load a day. if not sitting at home. so on 2/20/13 they realized they needed to make some cut backs. brilliant idea was terminate the original drivers that were paid higher. no ethics

That don't even make since. Why not put the new planner elsewhere and hire one with more exp instead and keep you all rolling and make money for you and the company as well.No common since as usual.Companies just don't think, instead drivers are the ones left out in the cold.Goes to show who gets favored more.

    it's all about cheapest pay.

i worked for my company 8 years. had benies and good pay. when the economy sank the new drivers WHO had been driving longer then me. were paid less and working more hours then me.

when i first started driving $13 was starting pay. now it's $10 an hour. and as for my yearly pay. i can't find anything that pays close to half what i made before the economy went south.

    Yep, life sux sometimes.

I was a small time home builder for many years. Back in 2007 I had my "plan" for an early retirement all worked out. I subdivided a piece of land I bought into 10 building lots and started building entry level spec homes that I "knew" there was a demand for. I was still working on other projects too. I planned to build out the 10 houses, take the $500,000 projected net, sell my home that had a "huge" amount of equity and retire with a million bucks in hand.

Then Bush, Bernanke and Paulson made that fateful "State of the economy" announcement in the Rose Garden in the Fall of 2008 about how the economy was on the brink of collapse unless...

    The rest is history...

I lost everything except my wife, dog and cat. :) Well, at least I was able to keep my house. However, that "huge" amount of equity I thought I had vanished into thin air.

Now I'm a truck driver. What's the old saying, "When life serves you lemons, make lemonade".

very happy with marten so far. apu's on all trucks. auto detention after 2 hrs at $20 per hour. intermodal pays by the day, starting me at $168 a day. same if 4 or 14 hrs. break down or flat tire on the road, $20 per hr wait time, same if truck is in the shop. monthly $100 bonus for watching a safety video on the qualcom, $200 every 3 months for the same. in cab scanning. well maintained trucks and trailers. staying in the LA area home daily with maybe 2 overnighters a week. work is Monday to Saturday 6 days a week

So Cal Dave, I found a position with a small regional company last June after driving OTR cross country for over 3 years. I'm not home every night, however, I'm home every weekend and usually an overnight stop at home during the week. Great company too. Good equipment, open fuel card, 6 holiday pays a year, 40 hours a year sick leave, decent insurance, great 401k company match, etc.

Hey So Cal, what is the name of this company so I can look them up? Do they hire out of CDL school? I live in LA, and this sounds like a good alternative to OTR. Thanks.
