As in all endeavors there is a minimum and a maximum equipment level. I see new drivers pull in with 1-3 year old 3500 or F350 dually trucks that I’m sure that are still making payments on with a 25K fifth wheel hitch in the 8 foot bed ready to pull 14000 pound fifth wheels. Thats simply not the case.

The lower end of the equipment requirement is where most of your towing will be. The smartest people who deliver RV’s are driving 4-6 year old trucks, (2500 and F250) that are paid off! Some have a camper shell so they can sleep in comfort on the road. They never do 5th wheels. The money differential between a bumper pull and a fifth wheel is never that large. There are 3 to 4 times more bumper pulls that fifth wheels that need delivery, so why bother. Many delivery companies now list a fifth wheel hitch as an option - no longer required.

By not having the proper equipment in the truck you lose out on opportunities to haul more loads most company require long beds and 5th wheels to be mounted

So far from the web sites - CWRV, Horizon Transport, Mapletree, and Synergy do NOT require 5th wheel hitches. All will let you start with just a 1 ton truck. It does not have to be a dually.

For someone starting out not delivering larger fifth wheels is a good thing. The additional stress on the truck is not worth the pay differential. In addition the lower MPG will eat up most of any additional pay.

I would suggest anyone who would consider RV transport to just try with the minimum equipment requirement and see if it’s really for you. The seasonality of the work and driver turn over rate is still high with people who did not know what they were getting into.

Starting out you will not see that many fifth wheel delivery's.

Ill be starting out with a 2500HD and am trying to get the basics rounded up because I really dont know if its for me or not, I used to run semi's I loved it but it was hard on the wife. We are in hopes now since we are in a position for it she and my daughter can go with me more, thats the down side to most the companies is the rider ages. But as me and the wife said to get me started thats going to be on the lower of the requirements because I do miss getting to drive. Would be nice to get with a company that if they do not have reloads of being able to find mine, there again most do not let you play outside with others......

    I do have the time:

Here is the description on fifth wheel requirement from RV transport companies web sites.

CWRV - CWRV prefers you have a Fifth Wheel rated at least 20,000 pounds. Without a Fifth wheel or lighter hitch, the number of available dispatches you receive may be limited.
Horizon - (A 5th wheel is optional, but not mandatory to start) Rated at least 20,000 pounds.
Bennett - Fifth wheel hitch – 20,000 pound load rating. (They do require a fifth wheel hitch!)

Working hard for you... if you want to go with Bennett - bring a fifth wheel hitch.... it is NOT REQUIRED with the major transporting company's. Keep in mind - only 1 out of every 4 to 5 shipment is a fifth wheel. If you all ready have a fifth wheel hitch - bring it. If your just getting into the business don't spent the money until you think this type of work is a good fit for you.
