Hi everybody. I'm new here. I've been looking at a career change(from building) due to the fact that the body is getting a little older. I looked into RV transporting as I could learn the ropes a little at a time and slowly phase out of the building business. I know, it's not like "real" trucking but I thought it might lead to that someday. I could get familiar with life on the road, logging, etc. and maybe go OTR or regional after I paid my dues with a company for a couple of years. After a lengthy investigation and a couple of trips to their facility in Wakarusa Indiana, I applied. Long story short, They rejected me because(their claim)I have only one working ear. A surgery left my right ear deaf. I have contacted a couple of other companies and they couldn't believe the ear had any bearing. But, I digress. What I'd like to know from some of the folks here is if anyone has any thoughts, experiences, etc. about this form of "trucking". I have a cdl-a from a truck driving school, passed the DOT physical and with the economy being what it is......a lot of time on my hands. Since I'm pushing 55 and the cemetery is in site(although I'm in excellent health and a legend in my own mind:biggrin_2559:) I thought driving might be an opportunity to work a little less hard and still make a living. Any thoughts? Anyone? Thanks

I don't have the faintest idea, Sir, but if you'll PM me, I'll hook you up with a gal in Albert Lea, MN, who is an expert. Oh, your age doesn't matter. You passed the physical. That matters. Good luck!

Thanks roadaholic. I tried to PM but found that I have to wait until I get 50 posts. Since I'm more of a reader than poster it'll probably take a while.

Hauling RV's is a good way to wear out a good truck and go broke doing it . If you go to Horizon's website they will tell you how much a driver "made" after subtracting fuel costs from delivering a load . What they don't tell you is you have to use some of that "made" money to buy fuel to deadhead back to Indiana for another load . A few years ago there were more plants open and you could get return loads out of TX , KY , MD , CA , and OR . Now those plants are shut down . Hauling is almost always one way , deadhead back which cuts your pay per mile in half .
When Roadmedic comes around he can give you the current state of things but I doubt any of the larger transport companies are taking on trucks .

Thanks guys. Actually it was Horizon that I had applied to. My application was about 1 day away from being accepted so I went and bought my truck and the hitch gear. Phone conversations with a person led me to believe all was well so I didn't worry about it. Got home from South Bend with the truck and in the mailbox was a letter of rejection. I called on Monday and was told that my bad ear kept me from being accepted. I said I had passed the DOT physical but they were worried about lawsuits in case of an accident. Didn't make sense to me so I just figured they were just too slow to take on newbies and didn't want to be straight with me. I may be wrong.Anyway, I'll try to figure out how to PM a Mod. Thanks.

O.K. then . Do like I said . Take their claimed earnings for a load , calculate the cost of fuel to return to IN , then look at what you actually made and how long it took you to earn it . Then deduct your expenses . Too many people have a truck that's paid for and don't figure the cost of replacement . If things were good you'd easily put around 150,000 miles on a truck in a year .

I think I've pretty well given up on the RV gig.I have some friends who have been driving FECC for quite a while and they really like it. I haven't talked to them in nearly 8 months so I don't know if the economy is hurting them much or not.The started B unit then went to a D. They told me they were making good money with the D since they were white glove now. I'd like to get into something, just not sure what yet.

Yeah , White Glove is temperature controlled so they get a lot more loads . It's a touchy subject with O/O's . A new driver for a fleet owned truck can move into White Glove ahead of an O/O on a waiting list .
