safer to drive... vans, tankers, or flat beds?

Just be safe out there regardless what you drive. I remember one time being on I-40 . There was construction going on and we were at a stand still. A really bad storm was going on and funnel clouds kept forming and disappearing. It spooked a lot of drivers out and they were cussing up a storm on the CB about how we should get to moving. One guy comes on and says, "Well if its your time, it's just your time."
If that tornado would have hit us, it wouldn't matter if we were in a tanker, flatbed or van. We'd be outta there.

well obviously, everything seems to think my question was "which is impossible to die in". I was just wondering like statistically which would have the best chance of staying safe, even with it being 95% the driver, due to crosswinds, visibility, etc.

But like you all have said it they all have there ups and downs.

I do have one more question though, Snow chains, how good do they work to prevent slipping on snow/ice? IM JUST CURIOUS IM NOT SAYING SNOW CHAINS ARE A PERFECT SAFETY FEATURE AND IM NOT GOING TO NOT LIKE TRUCKING IF THERE NOT PERFECTLY SAFE, so relax with the sarcasm. will the snow chains, more times then not, keep your traction on an icy road?

i never used them and never will.. my feelings always was, if i needed to chain up and drive, i don;t need to drive.

i do not know of any company here in the east that uses them.

nothing is a perfect safety feature. it still comes down to the drivers discretion

Wow Anthony a serious response im proud of you!

I share the feeling of not driving but as a new otr driver I feel like I will have to if its a while of snow especially in the north in winter.

I see some of the youtube truckers watching trucks slide all over in ice and cross winds, probably very light. But they don't have chains on ever, im wondering if the chains would, for the most part, greatly improve the chance of sliding, getting blown (...by wind), and anything else that the driver would not be able to control.

I have never used chains. Honestly only time in my career they were needed was a cold winter in Oregon going down Cabbage. I waited at the truck stop until it was safe to proceed without chains. If they tell me to chain up, I'm sitting. The freight will get there when it does.

Even as a new driver, if you tell them you don't feel safe driving in those conditions there is nothing they can do. Do what you feel safe doing. There will be DM's who harass you and try to make you fee bad. That's the nature of the beast. Bat and your ground if you don't feel safe.

As long as im not going to get fired (you say there's nothing they can do) Then I will have no problem telling them no, they can harass me all they want ill just pop in ear phones...

didn't really think telling them no was an option, so #### even worrying about chains.

Im soon to be 21, no girlfriend, no kids, my only financial obligation is my $40 dollar cell phone bill and gas for my car, so im not really concerned with having to get a certain amount of miles its more of a job id really like doing. So yeah ill probably just sit in these situations.

All of Anthony's posts are serious. They may just be laced with sarcasm, humorous truths or otherwise. :p

And pfft... Chains. Put yer big boy panties on and don't even bother. No better time to drive if you ask me! Everybody's sphincter needs exercise! :D

I'm kidding. It's just like when I was in pharmacy. It's my license. If I don't feel safe doing what was asked of me; even a #### act of congress won't make me change my mind.

Also...anyone find it funny that "certain posters" go after those with charged arguments versus ones with actual applied logic?

Hey man, I go after EVERYONE! I don't care if you laid some logic on me or not. I say throw out some insults, make up some crap that gives me some sort of credibility, and then duck out when the crap hits the fan.
When it gets real, I'm all "Later, Dood"

what was unsafe working in a pharmacy? did they make you test certain drugs on yourself? haha also kidding.

and yeah I find it pretty funny, I feel like if they weren't in trucking they would be the guy in the office everyone expects to shoot up the place. Just angry as #### every post haha.
