Sounds like this dude might need a "this is what your job is" kind of talk! I can't imagine not doing a proper trip plan before starting the day.

yeah...will agree with Injun, but the DM isnt the one running that L/Os business.

sure dont help if you want to take 3 days off every week or two, or getting a $15,000 overweight ticket going over a bridge thats been de-rated to 15T.

But there has got to be a moment earlier when the L/O thought about throwing in the towel long before he crossed the $5,000 'in the hole' benchmark.

I use a junk deck of cards. I'll place a card somewhere on the truck in the morning where he should be looking during a pretrip. If he dont find it, he buys me a soda. if he DOES....i'll buy him 2.

lets just say he owes me about a case already. and his excuse? "i dont want to get dirty". i said, "SON....if you dont want to get dirty doing this job, you had better find another job....like....a greeter at wal-mart."

hes already basicly said "you're not the boss of me"...and my instant response was, "when you're on my truck...you're right...i'm not your boss.......I'M YOUR GOD". :biggrin_25525:

i'm not thinkin' so. I've already told him that if the time comes that he needs to find a new mentor, i'll physically toss his SHATner out of the truck if he dont want to go quietly. He seems to get it, and knows i'm not playing games with my business.....

It sounds like you are doing your best to teach the dude what he should be doing. He clearly doesn't understand the consequences if the DOT finds something wrong with the truck that he should have found during a proper pretrip. Someday he will! I suppose that he thinks it is OK to hop back into the truck at the TS and take off without checking stuff out too.

Maybe in the next day or two, i'll ask him to pull into a rest area, and act like its a DOT inspection. And the first thing i'll look at, will be his logbook (like i'm not doing that already) and let him see just how extensive and expensive tickets can be.

I've already shown him the video of the swift driver crossing that bridge from IL into MO weighing 78k on a bridge that was de-rated to 15T. I'm willing to bet he dont know how many lbs a ton is. :biggrin_25524:

He did state he had been on his own for only a couple of weeks. Say Dick, didn't you just recently finish mentoring your first trainee?
