I ran over a box spring. The wires inside the box spring cut up air lines before wrapping around the driveshaft. The truck was totaled by insurance company. The insurance company said the title would not be reported as salvaged because the truck is over 10 years old. I bought the truck back from insurance company. I plan to keep the truck for the duration. As a matter of fact, its being repaired right now. I was just asking if any drivers have went through the rebuilt title process with DMV? If so, how long did it take? Were you able to get insurance afterwards? I would also like to know if a driver made repairs similar to what I'm doing without going through process with DMV? I am not repairing any major components listed on DMV website. I hope that I clarified myself.

If all that was damaged was airlines i would have fought the insurance company on the totaling it. They sound as though they are a rip off and trying to take you for all they can. now they have your month payments plus your buy money. trucks normally dont total enless you have a bent frame in a bad area

You can build 2 a year without a license according to site. I used to build wrecked trucks over here in AL. the main reason they do the inspections is to make sure that stolen parts aren't used or retitling a stolen vehicle. Pete's, mack and KW are best to rebuild and have more value.
Body wise I'd have to say Pete is best built cabs. Like over 1700 huck rivets to make one. The OP should've asked to buy truck back with a "good" title.
None of it's a big deal just takes a minute to get inspection done if OP can find a rebuilder that will have title work done for a few hundred dollar fee he may be better off, save the trouble of towing it around as they will go to a builders shop.

So you ripped up some air-lines and have a spring wrapped around your driveshaft and the insurance company "totaled" out the truck???? How big of a POS is this thing anyways.... they are saying your trucks value is less than $2,000 going by the repair costs. Strange

I was thinking the same thing!! The spring holding my airlines broke, wrapped around the driveshaft, and ripped out airlines, all power lines from battery box!! Even with a service call all the repairs was under $800 bucks.........

    Strange indeed!!

I am a licened auto dealer, and am driving a car I bought from Georgia with a total loss title, and rebuilt myself with some outsourced work. I have dealt with insurance total loss vehicles before. Unless the title was asked to be sent in by the insurance company, you can still license and drive the vehicle after you repair it. When you sell it, you must inform the buyer of the condition of the title, for when they get the new title back, it will still be branded salvage or total loss unless you got that part corrected. Then you are open for a lawsuit and prosecution for fraud.

After I had my car rebuilt, I had the DMV inspector come and do his inspection of the car, plus show him all receipts and a list of parts used, along with cost. He looked over the repair, said it was fine, placed a sticker in the door jam stating the car was a total loss rebuild, and gave me paperwork to have it registered and taged. This was the first registration in this state of that paticular car.

In your case, you should be able to repair it and keep on going unless, as I stated earlier, you were asked to surrender the title. If not, and you kept tag and insurance on it, fix the truck and drive.

I have 3 trucks that I bought as insurance write offs and had them rebuilt. Here (in Alberta) there are two kinds of write offs. Salvage and parts. If a vehicle is written off as "salvage" it can be rebuilt and re-registered. If it's written off as "parts" that serial number can never be registered again. For a written off "salvage" vehicle, it's a simple case of fixing it and taking it to a certified salvage inspection facility and have it inspected. If it passes, take the inspection certificate to the DMV and they will reregister it. Simple as that. The inspection facility requires pictures of the damage before rebuilding began. While they inspect the entire truck, they will focus on areas shown to be damaged in the pics.

The way an insurance company works is they look @ what the total loss would be if the vehicle was written off and then they typically use a number of between 60% and 75% of that value for repairs. If the vehicle can be repaired for for less than the specified % of value then they go ahead, if not they write the vehicle off.

The problem with older vehicles is as soon as the repair facility starts the job, the repairs cause other damages (due to age and fatigue) and the cost of the repairs goes through the roof.
