Can a guy get any reception using a magnet mount antenna that's just placed on the inside of the windshield?

You'll get some reception. How good it is will depend on which way you're facing and the terrain you're in. I've done it when in a loner truck and it worked best when heading south and not near ANYTHING tall. Keep in mind the antenna is line of sight and the sensitive side is the one opposite the magnet. You'd do better to try and secure it to a mirror somehow.
Gears Thanks this. -
I velcroed mine on top of the mirror and it worked better than anywhere else.
got the stick one now though and love it -
I've got the stick one too, mounted on the passenger side. I don't have west coast mirrors so I mounted it on the grab rail. Works great if you're traveling East and South/North. I have found however a 3ft antenna that I might replace mine with.

it works on the dash..and if your listening to oldies, it brings back that skipping record kinda sound when the signal comes and goes
-
Mine is taped to the mirror and works just fine no matter what direction I'm heading in.
-
I have mine just sitting on the dash. It works ok as long as i'm going east, west, or south. Going north? fogettaboutit!
I'm looking into a better mounting location, but its tricky with a Freightliner cascadia. There's really no metal to attach magnet mount to, and no west coast mirror. -
i was curious as how to mount the antenna because im moving into a casadia
-
I used double stick tape once to stick it to the roof, But you have you the stuff from the auto parts called emblem tape its by 3m and really strong. wont w=mar the paint when you take it off either.

I slip seat all the time, from different day cabs and sleepers. some have places where the magnet will work, others I tape to the mirror, in sleepers I have found it to work real good just pushing it under the padding at the front of the roof, and have not had any problems
