update.
New Trainer is a great guy. Real chill and laid back. Been in the truck for almost a week (tomorrow), I had to set my upgrade test back a half a week since I was sitting in a hotel for four days. So now I upgrade on the 19th, but have to wait for a week and a half for the lease purchase class (they dont have a lease class the week of thanksgiving).
Things are going well. (ALOT better than they were)...
will do my best to keep you guys updated

Glad to hear things are on the up and up. Would be great to read a post about your experiences out with a trainer.
Keep up the good work! -
Aight Gears...lol.
So I head out with the new Trainer last Friday, and set out for California (Oxnard). New trainer was tasked with evaluating my abilities after I ditched my last trainer.
on a side note.... there is an Amazingly Awesome Buffet in Oxnard of Rose and 101. Hometown Buffet. WOW
so the last trainer told me I was a horrible navigator, was ####e at right hand turns, and was BOUND to get into an accident my 1st year of driving....
training dept warned me I would have to REDO my whole 6 week training...lol.
spent a week with the trainer and am going in for my upgrade next Friday.
as far as experiences.... it is night and day with this new trainer.
This guy is a real trainer instead of someone using a trainee for a paycheck. He doesnt try and push each hour of each day for more miles... actually is going over the training material (hazmat, SoP's, etc)
Dropped off the Cali load and got one bound for Ohio. Trainer drove about 4-5 hours each day with me driving 8-9 sometimes 10.... but it was so much more laid back because He was spending time caoching me while I drove, slept when I drove alittle, made sure I would wake him if need be on things I wasnt sure about or comfortable with...
only one draw back right now.... since I spent 4 days waiting at the Jackson terminal, I had to set my upgrade back from the 15th to the 19th... this sucks because KLLM isnt doing a lease purchase class that next week. so now I am hoping they will be able to keep me busy at SOMETHING for a week and a half...rofl.
been working on backing today, and probably much of this weekend and next week....
more to come... -
Thanks for the update. I think there's a bunch of newbies on the forum that would enjoy reading your accounts. I never went out with a trainer after school, but your posts still bring back some memories.
Be safe out there! -
Rolled out at 7:30 am from Glendale, KY. Headed South on 65 through Nashville and then 40 to Little Rock. Will hit Waco tomorrow. The Petro out here in Little Rock was FULL up, so I had to take a spot that was REALLY tight right behind the main building... (with the three pole/round concrete obstacles in the way.... had to turn around so I wasn't blind side backing it... and did I mention it was TIGHT?!?!?
Trainer ended up spotting for me, and I swear I came about 1/6 of an inch away from hitting a fender mirror on a PeterBuilt with 2 cats on the dash...
(cats were freaking out a little I think)
but she went into the hole...lol.
trainer kept telling me afterward that there are many experienced drivers who couldn't park where I just parked... which I graciously accepted....
but I think maybe he is just saying that to bolster my confidence... lol
we talked alot about the lease purchase at KLLM and my being single and such...
something that is a little concerning to me though is I was listening to the driver update on the KLLM phone line... and they are out of trucks???
what does that mean for me?
I come in for upgrade on Friday.... and the next lease purchase class is the following Wednesday....
ummmm, will there be a truck for me? -
I'm sure there will be a truck for you. If you've completed training, are able to do the job and can generate income for the company, you'll be accomodated.
Truck stops get filled up quick. I've got an APU, fridge and microwave, so rest stops work just as well for me, don't need a truck stop for chow.
Great job on the backing...your confidence is growing, that's good. Thanks for the update, be safe out there! -
Great post again bud! Nice to see your trainer is doing a good job for you. It's also great to see your confidence is building.
Stay safe out there!!!! -
Yup, great news that your new trainer is working out better for you. I hope everything else works out as well.
You say your single? Do you have any children? Being single WILL make it much easier for you, both living the lifestyle and the financial aspects of it. -
Interesting blog, I'm in my last week of school(Roadmasters) and will be taking the test Friday. I have a prehire from KLLM and some others one being Stevens which I was going to go to until I looked at KLLM's offer which got me thinking. So I'm doing my research and I'm trying to find out the real story about KLLM now. I was told they like to pressue you into a lease. I don't believe I will have the knowledge that is needed about this industry to sucessfully take on a lease. And I'm not going to be that nieve to think I will even after a year of OTR. Now after reading that this so called training is team driving not training is a concern to me. One of the main reasons I was looking hard at Stevens was their training although long, I have read good things about it and that Stevens is concerned about running safe and legal. It's very important to me that I get good training over the better pay that KLLM is offering in the end. I'm expecting driver/ driving training and not team driving training since I'm really paying the trainer to train me and not sleeping in the berth since he's getting my miles while I'm getting the training pay. So can you all tell me if this is KLLM's typically way of training and pressuring one to lease and if not taking a lease they will strave you out by not giving you the miles later? Is that the catch to their offer that seems a bit too good to be true?
Thanks for an honest answer in advance.Last edited: Nov 14, 2010

KLLM (to my knowledge) hasnt pressured anyone let alone me into leasing...
KLLM is dead set on drivers running legal...
I know a friend who is a company driver right now and he averages 2700-3200
