Now we know who is hauling all the cheap freight off the board. I dont care if you promised me 22K miles no deadheading $1.40 wont work. From the 1st of July til now Aug 13th I have only ran 2600 miles and living good why because I wont haul cheap while you are running you ### off to make a little I am sitting at home. Work Smarter Not Harder I dont load anything under $2 except I have hauled a load for $1.90 but it was 12 skids 3000 lbs
I have never sit at a shipper/receiver for 12 hours I have sat at a shipper for 6 hours but a extra $200 bucks in my pocket and it didnt cost me anything to sit well a couple gallons of fuel say $10 no if you are sitting at shippers/receivers for free you have a problem. I have had one that after sitting almost two hours and another driver told me it would more than likely be 1:00am before I get loaded I went inside and ask and they told me another 1 -11/2 hour I told them I been sitting there almost 2 hours and I had to call the broker to see if they wanted to pay $50 a hour and if not they need to find someone else cause I was only about 4 hours from my house and I was leaving. Well 15 min later I was loaded. I guess the knew at 8pm it would be hard to get someone else to come pick it up and have 2 stops delivered by 10:00 am. Its Business first then we can be friends

There are plenty of so called OWNER OPERATORS who :biggrin_2553: to anyone / everyone about the poor freight rates , but never say 1 word to the shipper or broker.

I have a nice printed FREIGHT RATE menu and EXTRAS sheet I give them to show what a DELAY is going to cost them, along with the EXTRAS they mention after they load the load. Very seldom get any problems.

You hit the nail on the head there Mr. Plumcrazy... To be clear, I am not at this time, an O/O but that is my goal.

Too many drivers sit and complain about what is happening to them instead of getting off their butt and saying something about it at the time.. I will not just sit at a shipper/receiver for hours without talking to someone and at least attempting to get my trailer loaded/unloaded! I mean why would you? When I first started this adventure I teamed with a great friend of mine and he would just take whatever was given. I was like; "dude, why don't you go and see if you can speed things up?". He would just be like; "they won't do a thing". How the heck are you going to know for a fact that thewy will not do a thing, if you don't ask???? I have always been satisfied with 99% of my days on the road,,including getting truck worked on. I love it when the guy behind the desk says; "it will be at least 3 days before we can get it in". No problem, put me in a hotel and pay me $65 a day or give me a loaner or....send me home with a paid for rental car...PERIOD!

So what is the opinion here on this forum on "detention time"? I've heard after 2 hrs of your appointment time. So, what would you charge?

I base mine on the weight

    Free for first 1/4 hour for up to 2,500 Lbs , 1 hour for 10,000 - 20,000 lbs and 2 hours for 30,000 lbs+ after that its $56.00 per 1/2 hour Mon - Fri , Sat $67.00 , Sun $79.00.

If have to leave the trailer first 24 hours is free after that it is $160.00 / day for dryvan or flat , $315.00 / Day for reefer + fuel.

You can say whatever you want for detention but unless you get it in writing and signed by the broker you don't have a leg to stand on.

If it's a large carrier like TQL, Mercer or CH Robinson they won't modify any contract and if they do they will tell you it takes 1 week for legal to look it over and they will have to book the load with someone else.

Well since I broker my own freight the CONTRACTS are already in place so no additional LAWYERS needed.

Customers know the RATES and EXTRA charges so its FAST service on their part or its costs them $.

The big carriers do the same , they just seem to forget to pass some of the $ they collect to the people pulling the freight.

This is where a good broker with a good contract with shipper comes in handy. The load where I sit for 6 hours the broker called me and informed me that it wasnt ready but go ahead and get over there and sign in but dont tell them I told you they will still have to pay your detention and there was a nice restaurant in walking distance give me a call when you get loaded

If anyone thinks they can operate for 1.28 CPM, I think they missed some of the cost. And then they forgot profit. This reasoning is why we have cheap freight.
