Just a quick question regarding scales. Do all trucks have to cross the scales or are certain trucks allowed to simply drive into the scales and take the bypass lane? Reason I ask is I'm driving an F550 service truck with a GVW of 8,450kgs. I've recently been dispatched to a new work area which requires crossing the scales en route to the site. I know I have to pull into the scales if they are open, just unsure if I actually have to roll over the scales. I would assume yes since my truck technically qualifies as a CMV.

In Alberta, BC or SK? In any of those three I only cross the scales if loaded--even in a van--unless there is no bypass or it is blocked. However, in your case, you're always loaded. The good news in SK is that you typically won't ever cross the scales because they're usually only calling trucks in over 10,000 kg.
Of course, if your Safety Fitness Certificate is provincial only and you're in AB, then you don't have to cross the scales as you're not a CMV until over 11,794 kg. -
I'm in AB. If I remember correctly our Safety Fitness Cert. is federal but I'll have to double check that tomorrow.

You're federal if ANY of the vehicles in that fleet EVER cross the provincial border, then you're a CMV over 4,500 kg.

So if it is indeed federal, I guess that means I'm rolling over the scales on the odd occaision they are actually open.
