i set the cruise control, keep the rpm over 1800-1900 and do up to 80 km downhill even in august without ever any heat issues, and never touching the brakes

Actually, I have not used Scania retarder but my friends who drive Scania say coolant (not oil) is overheating in Norway, Spain and Portugal. Maybe they don't keep the rpm high enough? But still, if you can convert engine into brake, why not do it?

Couldn't really say, I have never worked on one of his trucks. Please dont think that because our trucks are built for rough conditions they are not modern. Air suspension, disc brakes, CTI, bunk air, etc. have be around on US and Euro based truck out here for many years we just tend to shy away from lots of sensors, computers and other gadgety things that arent 100% necessary to do the job, we still seem to fit lots of shiney stuff and lights though....
Not every mod con is practical on evey job, I was working on a job in the hills were all the logging trucks had been fitted with cental tyre inflation because the company thought it would save them some money in tyre wear. Its all dirt roads, very narrow and pretty steep hills, many hills the trucks cannot stop once they begin up the grade or the truck cannot get moving again. one truck started on a long pull, approx 5kms, about 1km up the grade a log caught the air line between the prime mover and lead trailer ripping it off and dumping the air to both trailers (B double) all 24 tyres on the trailer went down and the operator continued driving to the top of the grade, all 24 tyres junked. Cost them some that day, the system had to be redesigned after that. one of the guys was telling me the life expectancy of the feed hoses for the front tyres was less than three days before they'd get ripped off again.

    People still double-clutch?????

    :biggrin_2552:

Not to brag....but I think it's still a Man-Card requirement here in the states to be able to "Float" gears.....:biggrin_255: Otherwise...one retains their "newbee" status.......:biggrin_2552:

Can you get away without sensors and gadgets with modern engines regulated by emission laws?

Someone has to try and test every new gadgets before they work perfectly. Mercedes was the first to try CAN-BUS electronics, they had a lot of problems but now it's working fine and every manufacturer use it and it's actually simpler than old style thick wiring harnesses.

I know Aussies use modern technic, you get ideas from Europe, Japan, US etc. My comment was more for US truckers who are afraid of anything outside their own borders. I don't see many innovative solutions in their equipment. Europeans travel around the world to visit truck shows and if they see something that might fit they operations they try it no matter where it is made.

@Workinh Class Patriot....try to float synchro trans :biggrin_255: And BTW you don't have to do double clutching, but it's better :)

In Europe, all manual transmissions are synchronised, but most of the auztomated are'nt (I think all except Scania Opticruise)..

i drive n ugly iveco, manual 18 gears and it has a 6 step retarder, the first step is the jake brake and the other 4 retarder, most of the time the jake brake is enough and i only have to usethe retarder fora a few seconds here and there, i also use the retrder to brake when i am stopping since i got used to it, and i have never had heating issues, but i always kept the rpm high as i was told when i started driving this truck

In italy we have had syncro transmissions since the mid 80's, the last truck to have a fuller crash box was the iveco turbostar that went out of production in the late 80's. with a syncronized gearbox there is no need of double clutching but many drivers still do so, and most of all if floated a syncro transmission takes a hell of a beating, the synchro would brake really soon
