We manufacture/assemble Euro , American ,Jap and Indian trucks in South Africa. As I have stated before. Trucks are actually tools used.If one brand was superior in all aspects then there would be nothing to discuss. We have American,European and Japanese class 8 trucks in our fleet. If Scanias cost the same to purchase as the freightliners. If they were available off the lot like Freightliners. If spares for the Scanias were as cheap and available every where like with the freightliners. If bush mechanics could repair the Scanias with out special tools like they can on the Freightliners. It Scania would finance trucks as easily as Freightliner do. Then I would choose Scania 10 times out of 10. Where I am from this is not the case so we have some Freightliners and no Scanias. There are a lot of factors to consider when buying a truck from a business perspective. If any one try's to tell me that a Scania is not great from an engineering perspective all it tells me is that they don't have experience with Scania. Scania's are also one of the cheapest cost per mile trucks if maintained properly. They do particularly well if the need is for fast and heavy loads. In poorly maintained fleets American trucks are far superior.
I absolutely agree with you they are just tools , this was the intelligent answer I was looking for! I have little experience with us trucks, a couple of thing I was wondering; is a typical us tractor unit heavy or have they managed to keep the weight down? Is the fifth wheel standard on both types? For instance ; could I hitch up to a us trailer?
i also agree with you bore is 130mm stroke is 156mm sweep volume is 16.35L scania use same bore 130 on their other engines ( dc13 12.75L) and (dc9 9.3L) new v8(16.35L) use 156mm stroke as previous v8(15.62L) which is still in production 12.75L engine use 160mm stroke 9.3 use 140mm stroke older v8 use 127mm bore 11.7L engine ( still in production) use 127mm bore and 156mm stroke same as v8 10.6L engine( no more available in EU) use 127mm bore and 140mm stroke 8.9L 5cyl engine use 127mm bore and 140mm stroke so scania have it all modular lot of engines use same parts scania use this 127mm bore for a long time from Jan1963 ....
not sure conventional t serie is no longer in production and R series are to heavy on front axle but scania sell lot of buses in mexico

The American trucks that are imported 2nd hand in to our neighboring countries are generally lighter than the imported European equivalent. Most of the EU 6x4 are from construction or heavy haulage sectors so they are quite a bit heavier than an American 6X4. The American trucks we get here (Locally assembled) are heavier then the imported American trucks because they are specked for heavier work.They are comparable to the Euro trucks on weight or just a bit lighter then the EU 6x4 locally made . The 5th wheels are standard between EU and US so they can just hook up.The air break connectors differ a bit.
