no it is not lost even engine block is lighter and it use less water it is still more than 70kg heavier than 620 or 83-4 than r500/560
scania use either ZF 16 speed with torque convertor or opticruise no standart mechanic transmission on heavy haulage. concerning PDE,they are used in in marine and genset variant of that diesel.
I have also never seen a Scania with a ZF box. I have seen them with Fuller boxes but these were put in by the owners and seemed to work well enough.
They used offer fuller before but now they say their own boxes are stronger so fuller is no longer an option
scania did put zf gearbox 6s1250to with its name g670 for 230-270hp delivery trucks it is simple gearbox with 6speeds without any group and they used to install 16s251+wsk440 (transmatic) for heavy haulage transport with weights of above 180t with scania name grsoh901r this 16s251 is out of production so new are slightly differen also they put tc-tronic and tc-tronic hd which dont have primary retarder ....... but now situation will change since zf is presenting soon their range of gearboxes with 2800/3500nm and wsk for 3500nm
What I was told they are skipping out on the VGT turbo on the new 13l. Don't know with the v8s but if I understood it right they finished with them overall. Been to many problems with them and just to expensive to replace + I do agree with the mechanic, 13-16l engine is enough to get a good spool up with a normal turbo, no need for VGT. Really funny now when I've been around searching for what's been wrong and every guy you talk to admits that the 13l is something that should never been put in to production. VGT, EGR, XPI was just made to fail together. The hole 13l 480 xpi was just a test engine that should never been sold to customers. Oh yeah, cracked IC was the problem, hard to find thanks to VGT turbo was compensating so good, cheap this time, extended warranty, like many things on that engine
I don't like those 480's, early ones were not the most reliable engine and also not brilliant on fuel, 6cl are usually sold as 440's these days but in Ireland it's nearly all v8's
The 12l 480 is fine. The 13l is where the problems are. It's funny how crap Scania really is on the 6cyl engines, take the 470 turbo compound. Fast as hell when it worked but the engines loved exploding in to pieces.
Over the years I've had 112's, 113's and 124's, the 6 cyl engine in those were fine, no problems but I didn't like the turbo compound or the 480's, too complicated. Too much to go wrong! I've seen problems with the 480's and I would never buy one, by contrast the v8 is a nice simple engine with in some cases better fuel returns. If I were to buy a truck in the 13l category it would be a Volvo!
