Well the question is what related to bad maintenance and what real breaking down on the 12 and 13 liter engines?
A friend of my dos all the maintenance for a trucking company having over 50 trucks running heavy load and using the 6 line in 440 and 480 configuration form PDE up to the new XPI.
Next to this job he also work for a Scania dealer so he can compare his own fleet to that of regular customers

On the VGT turbo parts he discovered that truck running heavy cargo and returning back empty from a job are the ones that will have the problems with having the VGT getting stuck.
Also the early XPI models could have a problem with the secondary EGR cooler on top of the intercooler being full of water due to condensation blowing the headgasket or cylinder 5 and 6 when opening the secondary EGR valve.
Some commonrail fuelpumps had bearing problems and some ceramic part in the pump coming lose. Looks to me non of this is service related.

HPI also used by Cummins. Well on this part maintenance is key in preventing problems and setting the injector on OBC with a torquedial. Also changing lub oil in time will help a lot.
Fuel lift pump is a weak link. The 440 and 480 dos good fuel economy after a ECU remap, best so far.

CD12 engines same story as the HPI on service also I find the camshaft on some series to be a weak part.

And yes the V8 16 liter hardly no problems but question is this be course the relative low engine load compared to the 6 line? We had some in with injector puss rods worn out and some crack in the flywheel housing having a load of fun replacing them but yes it by far the best engine. We also had them running as generator engines shutting down 4 cylinders under 30kW load saving fuel like the best but making a horrible V8 sound if you don’t know this option.

Scania man and king Q Thank this.

Scania makes some good engines. I've got some snowcats that have a DS9, 9 Liter intercooled and turbocharged straight 6 diesel. 325HP. Very reliable, starts to -35C with a few shots of ether. 180L or 200L (can't remember) good for 12 hours. Have a centrifugal oil filter, first experience with these and they seem to work great.

Scania truck at start of thread looks slick.

Usually they make a brilliant engine, they really do last and are pretty trouble free, they are one of the better engines out there today but in recent years they have made a couple of dogs, first the 470 turbocompound which was over complicated and the turbine bearings were prone to failure if not maintained and ive heard of the bearings going into the engine causing it to blow, the second is the 13l 480, another over complicated engine, these are giving plenty of trouble and some failures, the rest of them are still fine, just stay clear of those two

13liter with PDE injectors ,simple turbo, and SCR is a good engine too,its strange why it take it so long to offer this engine in such configuration since its introduction in 2007, it would saved them alot of warranty money

    Scania man Thanks this.

Yup the engine itself is fine it's all the ####e attached to the pair of dogs that causes all the problems, I never even considered buying a turbocompound cos you could see future problems from the outset, part of the reason the v8 is such a good engine is because it's simple, that's how they should be kept

    this bold is impossible ,

worst scania engine ever was 124 440 , this is engine being used in mid europe , it is 4 nox version , interesting for markets around austria ( for pass austria you get ökopunkte , each pass take as much points as your engine take.......so it was difference if you have normal euro3 with 5 or this 440 with 4(since you get never enough of them for austria)

that engine was not offered at all markets , only here related for pass in austria

than 10.6L 380hp euro3 was quite bad engine

470 is quite nice as long as turbocompound works good but when you count how much did you save on turbocompound and how much does it cost to rebuild there are still savings (470 vs 420hpi save over 1L lets say it is 1.1L , over 600 000km (that is how long turbocompound works without rebuild) you will save 6600L of fuel .....lats say that from beginning to now average fuel price was 1€/L this makes 6600€ , and turbocompound rebuild cost 3000€ so you still did earn some money...... ~3600€ hard to tell how much was fuel it depends on time and country but this is about minimum saving you can gain ......here it was possible to get it until 4/2008

470 euro4 and 480 euro4 were quite bad , both on performances and fuel

as for dc13 here best sales is 440, i dont think that there is any 360 , and there is smaller number of 400/480

only very first r480 had problems for now , with injectors because of bad fuel , (until 1.5-2year you could not get good quality fuel here when you go on south , here when you buy xpi scania you had to sign paper that guarantee is not valid if you fill low quality fuel

this engines go very well 480 can be compared to 500 v8 , they are very good on fuel , only engine which can compare in productivity is 480hp v6 actros except actros need ad blue ( which is very expensive here about 1.1€/L, if you dont fill crap) so scania can be even more profitable

what is bad about dc13 xpi is that they have too small working range (only from 1000-1400rpm) and this require very frequent gearchanges

also service intervals are only 90000-120000km which is not as competition offers

so if you bought r470 in 2008 and keep it until now fuel price was probably above 1.2 or 1.25€ x6600L -3000.....you can earn about 5000 on fuel comparing to r420

and many people did not keep truck so long(sold it from 500-600k)..... so in this case even more

730 is now one of the worst engines Scania ever made. No power, high fuel consumption, SCR problems etc. 730 gets always beaten by old 620. New 2 pedal Opticruise is also a joke, like every robot box out there.

Buy 13 liter XPI , delete the EGR and you have a good engine without any emission crap, no urea, no DPF and VGT turbo lives long when there's no soot circulating inside the engine.

Is there anyone around here that has succeeded to tune the early 13l (2010). The guys in Kokkola has tried a few times but never really had any luck. Or do you have to go Denmark and put it on the dyno for real engine tune, an 12l we have has been there, pushing out a bit over 560hp.

From what I have heard the 620 is pushing out close to 700hp and 3500nm.
Wasn't it in Norway that 30% of all 730 has had power loss problems, some software issue and injectors stuck open.

I can't speak from experience here but a company 5kms from my house called Tierney international run a load of 620's and 3 730's, they do heavy fridge work to Italy which is very mountainous and both drivers and John Tierney say the 730 is very light on fuel and there's no comparison on power, the 730 will eat the 620, I drive a 620 and I'm very happy with it, it's causing no problems at all
