    interesting , only 3348

but some things are not clear to me , how 108t payload and 150t gross if 9t per axle?

in my opinion it is better to chose 5.33 or 4.833 ratio than 5.143 it have stronger hubs (4:1 instead of 3.429)

Actually on the steering in SA we are allowed 7,7t maximum.
    So they have 15 axles at 9t = 135t plus 7,7t steering = 142,7t
So to get 108t payload the empty combination needs to weigh 34,7t.
Something not right it seems as the latest combinations they say weigh 60t empty and have 15% more payload. That would be 108t + 15%(16,2t) + 60t = 184,2t.
Don't know but I was told these were very reliable.

all mercedes hl7 are robust , those 5.143 are here mainly used for all wheel drive trucks , they are 27/18 since you are long in trucking you maybe remember that number?

other version of 27/18 now is 6

They look nice. A engine with less cylinders will always provide better fuel economy though.

not necessary , it really depends how do you drive them

under heavy conditions v8 can get better fuel economy than scania inline 6 engines,

but even on medium difficult highway with 88000lbs 85mille in one direction climbing 2300feet height difference and in other direction 1800feet (steepest hills are 6% 4milles and 8% 2.5-3mille)

on other way if you push it too much it can use plenty of fuel , my neighbour drive 580 v8 with 900 000milles and he get 38L/100km -6.15mpg he drive catwalk profiles for car carrier manufacturer kaessbohrer , he mostly have 5-10ton of load so gross 42-53k lbs and sometimes return steel as raw material

but he push her pretty much overtake other trucks drive without speed limit....

some month and half my friend was driving latest euro6 r580 v8(scania claim it have performances of current 620) and he says it goes like dead cat in eco mode , only in power mode it is real v8 with power and sound (it come with up to 3different modes , eco-to save fuel , normal-good compromise between fuel economy and performances, power-performances with quick gearchanges and offroad-soft response and wider engine band less clutch used....)

    It`s a myth.

For example the most powerful scania inline 480hp is really bad on fuel. Decent driving with a the entry level V8 /500hp will get a better mpg. And my friend who works as mechanic in Scania dealership says, it has the least amount of problems, because they have been in the production for a long time with minor changes. The opposite story for the 480 as it is one of the worst engines Scania has produced.

it is 490now , but 480is not bad , in normal conditions it get about 1L better than 500

you probably mean about 480e4? i ask because there is plenty of them in your market and in other baltic contries and poland? 470 e4 is even worst

it is bad , e5 is good but is too complicated so here operators mostly opt for scr version with pde and fixed turbo also they need eev because of tolls

what i see as problem with egr e5 480, it have pretty narrow usable engine rev when you get above 1400rpm it start to use more fuel than scr

worst ever was 440 e3 with 4nox it was sold only in our region-on markets related to austria and later in brazil

Words from the mechanic are not to buy any of the HPI or XPI injection engines. 500e5 is still PD injection like old-school. I pretty much drive a dedicated route with different trucks. On the same route the 480 can´t get under 27l/100km with empty reefer and barely getting 32-33l/100km loaded 18-20t. While a 420 with a lot more miles on it, could make 22-24l empty and 28-30l loaded. I haven`t tried a 500 on the route though. Companies here that bought the 480 before, mostly buy 500`s now.
