We went to the JJ Keller scannable log books back on 10-1-14. They are an absolute PITA. Any error that makes it unscannable, even though it is perfectly HOS compliant, becomes an interoffice log violation. Draw a line to far and it becomes unscannable. The days of making a mistake, correcting it and initialing it are gone. I CANNOT do these scannable log books on my steering wheel perfectly enough to not get an interoffice log violation.

My question is.....Can I run a log page during the day that I can make mistakes on, then transfer it "PERFECTLY" to the scannable log at the end of the day?

I was told that ALL companies that still use paper logs books are going to the scannable logbooks.

More than likely, but you'll want to get in touch with your logging department.

Yes, perfectly allowable. As long as you maintain the previous 7 days logs and have a current log for the current day, you are covered. Many a time i have made a mess of my current days log(Messy Printing) and have cleaned them up in the sleeper after the finish of my day.

You have a lot of company on your attitude towards "scannable logs" . To answer your question, I see no problem with doing it that way, but you are just creating more paper work for yourself. I find no regulation that every log sheet has to be the same, so if you are checked during the day, you still are in compliance.
Now, after you transfer all the information to the "scannable log", I would completely destroy the one you kept during the day or by still having that in your possession might raise a red flag if a DOT person saw it.

I don't put anything in my logbook till the end of the day. I just use Post-it notes throughout the day

You are leaving yourself wide open for a violation.

I want to just write down all my times down the minute and make my log page at the end of the day, back in the sleeper where my desk is, but that is not legal. A log page must be current with your last change of duty status. I could probably get away with that, but all it takes is for some 4 wheeler to get me in an accident and I would be in violation. I am not taking that chance. My log book may log like a mess at times, trying to write to fast, but its still legal and I keep it legal. At all times.

Mark over the scratch log grid, "void" as soon as you get it recopied and then destroy it.

Some of us were told that recopying was frowned on, but having a legible record should trump that concern. Legible in the case you mention also means legible to the scanner.

Lot's of good advice in this thread in the first several answers.

I do ask them questions, then I ask here, or visa versa. I want to know the truth, no matter who tells me.

The truth is subjective, we can read you the letter of the law but your company policy is going to trump that in most situations. Personally I'd have no issue with that. However, I'm not sure of their audit procedures and what other types of issues you'd be opening yourself up to. That would be my only concern. 9 times out 10 I would imagine they're going to want a legible log sheet.
