Been thinking about becoming a trucker ever since my wife passed away. Tired of being home alone...love to drive...require very little sleep... I feel like I fit the mold pretty well EXCEPT....
... I am truly scared to death of heights in a vehicle.... I have literally taught rock climbing and rappelling courses going over the edge of cliffs BUT stick me in a vehicle on a high skinny mountain pass with no railings and I freeze up!
My question is... do you as a trucker end up on these kind of roads frequently enough to say I won't work out as a trucker or should I not be concerned about it? I currently live in Missouri...no high mountains here...but of course I realize I'd be crossing the country.
Any advice?
Scared to death of Heights...can I drive a truck?

I am personally terrified of heights. My fear is standing on top of anything I can easily fall off of. I have been driving twelve years and don't have any issues with my fear of heights when driving. I just don't climb worth a #### and walk on top off tall loads. That is why I prefer to run tankers or haul equipment. Good luck to ya.

Hubby and I run a refer... We haven't had to deal with any 'skinny' high mountain passes... I think the skinniest would be through the Rockies on 70, but that is two lanes in each direction... Just some of it is elevated through the canyon.

truckerPig,
If you are scared of heights,This may NOT be the job you will want......
You will be going over tall Bridges on most interstate highways. East coast..Southeast,Florida, Even Toledo,Oh has a high bridge MANY folks are complaining about on i-280.
You cant get away...If you fear heights, Trucking is not for you......
Someone post a picture of the Rainbow bridge in Port Arthur,Tx please!!!!!!!!! So this guy can see what its really all aboutcktaylor8 Thanks this. -
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I'm sure that you coukd find a company to work with you. I do think it would be a oroblem if driving over bridges were a problem as well. .

Sorry for the loss of your wife truckerpig. If you're going to be an OTR driver you had better face your fears and get over that hurdle real quick. As an OTR driver you never know where the next load is going to be.Could be down south or the rockies. You're going to have to drive thru the mountains no doubt about that. You need to get over your phobia because one thing you don't wanna be in a big trk while driving is petrified.Thats a good way to cause an accident or worse. You'll need to talk to your company about this and maybe you can get reginal or dedicated. But otr is just that, you run 48 states and maybe Canada. You really do need to be in tip top shape and ready to run wherever the company sends you.
