i work for central refrigerated. ok so heres the thing. its like each new customer i go to . im always scared. because of the backing. some places are great but
some i dont understand why they make it so bad. and its like im always worried. how long till this worry goes away. i like the job now but i hate being scared. i dont want to go like this. at least owner operator you can refuse the load. but being company you cant. cant wait to buy a truck and be able to do this. ill be much more comfortable. especially if its a dedicated route. amazing

So you want to buy a truck so you don't have to go to places with tight docks?

Here is when you get to the point that you don't feel that way. When you simply accept that some places are going to be a challenge and it's your job to beat that challenge.

Not at all to be an smart $$$, but it's true. It's like any other fear - face it and you'll beat it. Approach it as an opportunity to learn and better your skills and forget about anyone else who may be nearby and watching. Before long you'll see a huge improvement and you'll be proud of what you've accomplished and overcome.

You can do it as well as everyone else has done it. Because, trust me, you aren't the first to go through it. Nor will you be the last.

And, if anyone laughs...just remind them that at one point - THEY WERE IN YOUR SHOES.
And as far as dock workers? - Most of them cant even figure out how to drive a rig forward much less back into a dock.

Don't put pressure on yourself that you have to get it in the dock at the first shot or within a specified period of time. Once you can get part those 2 hurdles, you will find that you relax and are much more successful at backing.

I used to get nervous, but like DE said, you have just accept that the new dock will be a challenge. That said, if you can access Google Earth (via laptop or smartphone, etc) you can get a good look at the site before you arrive and take a lot of the stress out. I do and it helps a ton.

Many places were in business long before 53' trailers, and trucks with condo sleepers were around. And many places are in tight downtown areas. It's just something you're going to have to get used to.

Buying your own truck won't help. You will be turning down more loads than ever. Can't make any money that way.

Intermodal can be just as bad, you will be going to many of the same places. And most of the intermodal yards, at least in Chicago, are in the oldest, and worst parts of town.
