Scenario, I know this isn't safe, but what is the law on this.
You just finished driving for the day, you dropped off your load and now your getting some home time. You drove for 11 hrs that day, your no longer on dispatch. Is it legal to drive home (Bobtail or empty trailer), and your drive will take a while to get there, hours in fact?
Do you have to take your 10 rest, even though you are not with a load or going to a load? You are now considered off duty, going home for vaca time.....

The load or dispatch has nothing to do with driving after you hit your 11.
You can still legal bobtail home. But you can't take your trailer, even though it's empty. -
The bobtail home is a gray area.
I believe it would not be a problem with the DOT, say for an hour.
Anything longer, I think would present a problem. Company policy will also be a factor here. They may require logging for all miles. -
You're allowed to B/T home as long as you will be off duty when you get there. You are using the truck as private transportation, just as you would use your car if you were driving from the terminal to your house. I don't believe there is any mileage limit. Not positive about dragging an empty trailer behind you.

why do they call it "bobtail" ?
-
I deliver trailers across the country and after they are delivered I am considered Bobtailing. Many of us get put out of service, because they believe there is no off duty driving until at your home or terminal. -
Bobtailing is just slang for power only.

So there's really not a 100% definition to this question. My understanding is, when heading back to work, from home you must be logged on. But going to home, is still a grey area as mentioned. Delivering trailers, drop them off and head back for another, is dispatched and should be logged on. You are given orders to go pick up another trailer, this is not the same.

I am an Owner Operator.
Say I deliver in Montana. I am done with dispatch. I am now going home. My choice. I run when and where I want.
This is the scenario I am referring to. It has nothing to do with dispatch.Garager Thanks this. -
