Any of the above on here? If so, how much actual 48 state running do you do? Are there regional positions that come open at various times? Are you averaging the 2400 miles per week that the recruiters state? Do you have to fight to get your home time?

    Just researching, thanks.

I figured id bring this topic back since Im wondering the same thing since I got a job offer today from Schneider in the bulk division. The recruiter told me it pays well... but from what I read in past threads it seems the bulk guys arent seeing very many miles. Ive heard they also dont let the bulk drivers take their trucks home, which I dont know how well that would work out for me.

Mr. D, I've talked to a couple of bulk drivers in the past week or so. One said his average for last year was 2000 miles per week. The other said his was higher, but has dropped to closer to 2000 in recent weeks. For me, that would still be Ok. And tanker drivers get additional pay for things that van drivers don't, so that helps a bit.

As for parking the truck at the house, no, you don't, because of the hazmat nature of a lot of loads. So the truck parks at either a a SNI OC or a designated location, like a tank wash outfit. I was told you have to live within a certain distance of said location to be hired for bulk. I'd have to park my truck in Charlotte NC, 45 miles from the house.

Just noticed your age, D. You might not be able to get on with a tanker/bulk outfit yet. I may be mistaken, but all I've checked so far say min. age 23 or 25.

Get some more time in vans, then think about switching. The transition won't be hard, from what I've read and talked with drivers about it.

The recruiter said they were willing to hire me on for bulk at my age, but she gave me the option of dry van so Im just going to stick with that.

The recruiters at Schneider will tell u what u want to hear. Schneider has a terminal in Edwardsvillle Ill right outside of stlouis where i live. The lady told me they were hiring for a Walmart account which would have me home alot of nights. I actually went over there to check the place out and verify what she told me. The manager told me they only do OTR and tankers there. Most drivers are out for 2 weeks straight.

That's pretty much what I've read, for all new driver employees. After you have been on for a few months, they will send out via Qualcomm notices of openings for dedicated account runs, for the area where you live, which you can put in for. But I've yet to hear from any SNI driver that that's what they got hired for.

Did you go to the Edwardsville terminal or the Walmart OC? Most drivers out of Edwardsville, whether van or bulk are OTR drivers home every 2 weeks. Most drivers out of the Walmart DCs are home between 2 nights a week and almost everynight, depending on how far away they live from the DC. If you want to work hard and only take 10 hour breaks and live further away from the OC, then it's not worth it to drive home for your breaks, but if you live close by and especially if you want to take more than 10 hour breaks, you can be home every night. Recruiters aren't really allowed to say you'll be home most nights, because it's not guaranteed.

I'm a Schneider driver on the Target dedicated account in Urbana, IL, btw.
