I've been watching and reading for a few months now. I am finally ready to ask some questions. I have the opportunity to start with Schneider in the bulk division in a week or two, depending on how quickly I want to move. I will be getting my CDL so it's all new for me. I have spent the better part of a year researching the life of a driver because as we all know, it's not a job, it's a lifestyle. I'm beyond the question of "is this right for me" and now to the point of deciding if Schneider bulk is a good fit. I know money isn't great when you first start, but what are realistic first year earnings for a tanker driver? I don't mind extended time from home. I actually welcome it! My kids are grown so I'm good to go there. My biggest concern is if the lifestyle will leave me penniless after year one. I am able to support myself for a year but that would empty my entire savings.
So any current Schneider bulk drivers out there that can give me a realistic idea about what I should expect to make in year one, assuming I'm doing a good job?
As always, this board is a great resource and to the guys and girls who post honest, truthful answers, thank you so much. If you don't know it, you are all helping a lot of people make decisions that will impact them, and their family's life.

I can't imagine you'd spend more money than you would make.
It's difficult to guess what you would make, as a new driver, and, also new to bulk.
You might want to consider hauling vans for a few months. Just to become more familiar with & learn about Trucking and "The Lifestyle", before going into bulk & chemicals and the Additional skills, equipment and responsibilities involved.
To answer your question, I'm going to say, $ 40,000. For year one.pumpkindriving Thanks this. -
Thanks Stormdriven. I've read anything from 38k-55k and I am sure that depends on a number of factors which are hard to define before starting. Somewhere between those two numbers I can deal with. It is OTR so that would imply more miles.

Don't waste time in the van division, that won't help you one bit. Depending on how hard you run you could easily break 45 to 50k your first year. Communication is key, you can't be shy. Let your DBL know if you are unhappy. Remember, you need miles to make money. That is the agreement, we run OTR and they give us miles, if they fail on that let them know. Remember to put in all your layover and detention pay, nobody will do that for you. Your appointment times will usually be pretty easy to make. Drive hard and get there day early, if you sit for 24 hrs you can get layover pay on top of the miles, it adds up. Log correctly, that means listen to how senior drivers do it not what they teach. Now you can be one of those rookies that are all gung ho about logging everything correctly and that's fine, so long as you want to make minimum wage.
You have to learn the system and how to game it. Listen to the senior drivers. Now some drivers love telling stories and you have to learn what to believe. Do you job, be smart and always, always communication is key. Let me say that again, communication is key. No really, don't be shy. I made great money at Schneider and I really liked my job and the people I worked with. I have very little negative to say and I think you are making a great decision. Start with Tanking and stay with tanking. Nobody ever seems to leave bulk once they start, it's the best trucking there is.
I put in my time with Schneider and now I'm with a company that is paying me the best money i have ever made, but I did my time. I won't say how much I make cause I'll just get called a liar but trust me, better paying jobs are in your future, just stay with that tank. Schneider will teach you how to do it, they will be patient and they really are a great company.mickimause, warrior81, Jaystew and 4 others Thank this. -
Thanks Ethos. After all the time I have spent looking at different companies, Schneider ended up being my number one choice. I have no tickets, violations, criminal record, and I have a stable work history with excellent references. I am thrilled at the opportunity to work with them and bulk seemed like the way to go. I know there are challenges to it that may not exist in van but I want to be the best at what I do and bulk looks like the way to do that. Hard work, a good attitude, and the ability to roll with the punches are all things I'm bringing with me. I know it won't always be the best thing in the world but this is the life I choose and for me, that makes all the difference. It's my choice. No one else's and isn't that why we choose to do this? What other reason would you live this way if it wasn't your choice?
This board is amazing and I can't tell you how much perspective it's given me over the last year. I know many people like to jump on here and vent their frustrations and that's okay. I try to take it for what it is and understand that some people have an ax to grind. I get it. I think this opportunity is perfect for me as a noobie and I'm ready for the ups and downs, and this company is the best fit.
I appreciate anyone who has something to offer to this thread. You guys are great and hopefully I'll get a chance to meet some of you in the near future. Not all of you though. HAHA!! -
In my opinion, Schneider Bulk should be every rookies first choice, you will make good money and get treated right and learn one of the most profitable types of trucking. -
Oh and they aren't joking about the Schneider Way, they have a process for everything. It usually makes sense but they are serious about it. There aren't that many rules but they are enforced. Again the other drivers will tell you how to get ahead. Safety is huge over there. The training department can seem a bit unorganized but once you get into the fleet you will see how good it is. The system usually works very well. Of course there will be hiccups but that is life.
pumpkindriving and mickimause Thank this. -
I see a lot of talk around safety and to be honest, that's been a huge bonus for me. It's amazing to think just how much damage a rig can cause but add into a tanker full of some nasty stuff and things get tricky real fast. Thanks again for all the info. I subscribed to the SN forum and will be going through that section again. This board is so big you can get lost in it!
