I just didn't like the insulting comment. Not that you meant to be insulting it just came off that way.
And in regards to the initial topic of this thread (per diem), it's been debated time and time again on these forums. Fact of the matter is for some people per diem pay works for them. For others being off per diem is better. For example, if you're on per diem, you pay approximately $1200 a year less in FICA taxes (social security and medicare). So right there you've made up 1cpm.
The other 1cpm could be made up with less income tax liability. Of course you can file per diem deductions on your tax returns, but that is a bit more complicated. Plus you're probably going to want to use a CPA to file your tax return (another $150-$200 bucks there) because if you file your own tax return and do per diem deductions there's a decent chance you're going to get audited by the IRS. If a CPA files your return they're more likely to take their word for it.
If you're on the per diem pay plan, you easily can just do your own taxes and file a form 1040EZ.
Of course if you have a mortgage or dependents you're going to want off of per diem because you have a lot of itemized deductions. If you're single with no home and no dependents going on per diem is the best option IMO. For everyone else it's not good.

My sister is a CPA of 30 years owning 2 offices practicing in 2 states.
The title of the thread is it is a little shady for Schneider to be whacking drivers 2 cpm for administration charges for filing their perdiem.paul_4lp Thanks this. -
The main thing to realize with most truck driving jobs (company or o/o) is your are normally away from home at least 5 or 6 days a week. The most important thing to me is the net pay I can receive during my time away from home. I wouldn't work for someone I thought was taking advantage of me, or work twice as hard for an extra hundred dollars. At the end of the day, the bottom line is the only line.

If Schneider is really charging drivers two cents a mile to receive per diem pay, it negates any advantage to the driver to take it. Why lower you income on paper just to come out even on taxes. The only reason to have per diem is to save money on taxes. Why would you save it just to give it back to Schneider. It seems very strange to me.

The one advantage you have of having the company take the per diem out weekly other than your check being larger is at the end of the year when you file you can do a 1040 and slide in your personal deduction on the form and save more in taxes.
if you have to itemize your deductions at the end of the year you won't be able to slide in that personal deduction also. -
I was on schneiders per diem plan my first year and still got almost $2k back in taxes. The last 2 years I've been off of it and last year I filed taxes myself and got almost $7000 back.
I decided to go back on Schneiders per diem plan this year to compare. For me it seems to help, but I'm single, have no dependants, and don't own a home. I also miss having large paychecks, not losing 1/3 of it through taxes, and not having to wait until the end of the year to get some of it back. -
I might be working for Schneider soon. I am based in the NW. -
So you get the privilege of paying schneider 2 CPM to reduce the company's taxes.

Don't forget also this will reduce your social security you get when you retire and also reduce 401k match
