    Used my bunk heater all through my 10 hour break now I'm idling the truck to warm it up before I start my day. Despite it being 18 degrees out, it still won't idle without the ambient sensor trying to shut it off.

    With sni if you are under a load company or ic you cannot drive off duty it must all be logged on duty

    Don't I/Cs have the "line 5" on their e-logs? They did when I was there. Company drivers have never had that option.

    Yeah they do have off duty driving but it can only be used when not under a load this is whay happened I was at a delivery live unload in Massachusetts they said it would take 2 hours I told them I needed to get some wiper blades for the truck and they let me drop the trailer in a dock I bob tailed maybe 20 minutes got some wiper blades and ran to the sprint store and came back and later I received a message saying call ica I called and he basically said that we are not allowed to be off duty driving while under a load because if we get in an accident they will go over our logs with a fine toothed comb maybe its just sni company policy I can understand if I was doing it to cheat on time or get a load delivered but it is what it is

    Use of Line 5-Off Duty Driving/Personal Conveyance Guidelines for Independent Contractors







    FMCSR Part 395
    Q. If a driver is permitted to use a CMV for personal reasons, how must the driving time be recorded?

    A. When a driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work, time spent traveling from a driver's home to his/her terminal (normal work reporting location), or from a driver's terminal to his/her home, may be considered off-duty time. Similarly, time spent traveling short distances from a driver's en route lodgings (such as en route terminals or motels) to restaurants in the vicinity of such lodgings may be considered off-duty time. The type of conveyance used from the terminal to the driver's home, from the driver's home to the terminal, or to restaurants in the vicinity of en route lodgings would not alter the situation unless the vehicle is laden. A driver may not operate a laden CMV as a personal conveyance. The driver who uses a motor carrier's CMV for transportation home, and is subsequently called by the employing carrier and is then dispatched from home, would be on duty from the time the driver leaves home.
    Schneider policy is as follows:
    ICs are permitted to record L5 duty status if, and only if,all the following questions can be answered yes:

    1. Am I NOT under a dispatch?
    2. Am I NOT en-route to my dispatch?
    3. Am I bobtailing?
    4. Is the purpose of my driving purely for personal reasons?
    5. Can I complete my personal business within the legal HOS limit?

    Note: L5 entries are not counted toward the 11 hour or 70 hour limitations, but are counted toward the 14 hour on duty limitation.
    Schneider National Carriers Inc. does not permit off duty operation of a CMV by company drivers and only permits off duty operation of a CMV by ICs as set forth in the above FMCSA Guidance. Neither company drivers nor ICs shall operate CMVs while the driver's ability or alertness is so impaired, or likely to become impaired, through fatigue, illness, or any other cause, as to make it unsafe for him/her to begin or continue to operate the CMV.




    FAQs:
    Q: If I'm at an OC on my 10-hour break and assigned to a load; can I use Line 5 and bobtail to WalMart to pick up a prescription?
    A: No, you are under dispatch. That falls under our definition of "laden." All time spent behind the wheel driving must be logged on Line 3 while under dispatch.
    Q: If I'm at home for several days without a trailer or a load assigned to me can I use Line 5 to bobtail to get maintenance done?
    A: Yes, you are not laden and use of Line 5 is within our guidelines.
    Q: If I'm not under a load but have an empty trailer can I log on Line 5?
    A: No, use of Line 5 is only permissible when bobtailing. Hauling a trailer meets our definition of "laden."
    Q: I just delivered my load and am at 13 hours on my DOT clock, can I drive 3 more hours to get home?
    A: No, you cannot use Line 5 to extend your 14 hour clock under any circumstances. This would also apply if you use Line 5 time while off duty at home, then choose a load and begin moving towards it. Your 14 hour clock began when you started using Line 5. Your total hours of service can never exceed 14 hours.
    Q: IC CHOICE scenario: Contractor delivers a load and tells his ICA he/she is going OOS for a period of time. They do not currently have a pending work assignment. Can they use their tractor as personal conveyance if they choose a load while they are OOS?
    A: Yes, as long as they have informed their ICA that they are going OOS and the EVLV work is captured in Events. We also require a minimum 10 hours off duty prior to beginning work.
    Q: Can I use Line 5 if I'm doing a 34-hour restart while under a load?
    A: No, you are under dispatch or "laden" as referenced above. Truck must stay stationary for the entire 34-hour period.
    Q: If I am unsure about whether or not I should use Line 5 what should I do?
    A: Call your ICA or your RLPM. They will help you make the right decision. Our goal is to have a safe, well rested fleet operating on the roadways.

    This company is a joke. New policy: I do my work however it seems best and safest while I look for another job. If they fire me for doing the job to the best of my abilities, fine, more time to look for another job. If I can't find another job driving a truck, fine, I guess this industry will have to do with some more barely literate 85 IQ black guys from Gary and East St. Louis and some more ESL 1st gen immigrants to do short hauls around the east coast making less than minimum wage. Suits me fine no matter which way it goes. My safety, my health and well being, and my driving record are going to take priority over whatever garbage plans they throw at me.
