So now the Charlotte shop has the service desk moved out into the bays as well. I don't get it. I asked the service writer there and he said "its just what Green Bay told us to do". I'm assuming its because SNI feels they can save a little money by not lighting, cooling, and cleaning the indoor building? All of the other shops are like that now that I've seen, Atlanta, Carlisle, etc.

Such a friggin joke. Instead of having a professional looking and comfortable area where drivers could talk with the service writers, now we'll be trying to have a discussion about what we need to have fixed on a trailer while a mechanic sits one bay over going to town on a frozen lug nut with the 1" spline drive. I'm not kidding, last time I was in Carlisle it took me 4 tries to ask the service writer for a license plate lamp because in the bay next to me a mechanic was over there wallowing out a hole with a die grinder. Not to mention that we'll be getting a lot more of the "sorry we can't write anything up because our computers are down" thanks to the computers being put in an outdoor environment with heat and humidity they are not designed for. You should see what that does to a motherboard... capacitors go POP POP POP.

Am I missing something here or is it truly because some corporate desk jockey up in Green Bay figures it might save a buck or two to pad their yearly bonus?

The don't want some guy sitting inside in the office manning the desk. By putting it in the shop area they can work on equipment while also keeping an eye on the estimation area for drivers. So yes it is a cost issue

I get the impression that the attitude is generally "Yes, they pay us to maintain trucks, but we don't want to actually work on them." There are some exceptions, of course.

I also love the "You're female. Can't possibly know anything about vehicles - you don't look butch enough" attitude, subtle as it is. Complained repeatedly about my brakes, mech looked at them to pacify me, said in a VERY surprised tone "You're right - these are shot!"

It's not that you're female - it's the fact that you're a driver. To mechanics a truck drivers ranks above a single celled paramissium but below toxic mold in terms of intelligence.

I think they're doing it so the service writer can more effectively supervise the mechanics and their time usage. Plus overnight when it's not busy the service writer can work on a truck

Well, that's good to know. Where I rank in intelligence, I mean. ;)

It does make sense to get the service writer out close to the mechanics. Although finding the writer overnight can be a pain, too...as well as dealing with the frustration of trying to be heard over impact guns and air tools.

On another note...waiting sort of patiently to be unloaded at Coca Cola, no preassignment yet, and I STILL am not in Ft Worth. Made an appointment for my pm for tomorow at the Dallas OC...here's hoping.
