General accounting question: I know SNI requires a maint escrow account, but are any of you adding to it voluntarily? Also, when figuring your tax bite, are any escrow monies taxable?
It's not the day-to-day job I'm concerned about....it's the administrative stuff....not my cup 'o tea! Just trying to avoid those ugly surprises.Jar-Head Thanks this. -
48Packard...
Although I don't start till November 17, I am adding an additional $75-$100 a week to build up the account.... (NOTE!) I am NOT adding to the SNI deduction, but (as Grandma did), putting it in a separate "envelope". That way I have access to it when I need it.....
I too am not a seasoned tax accountant, but I DO have a "trucker accountant"... She is treated as a business expense, and is paid weekly. I just give her all my data, and she comes back with all the reports I need. Remember, the devil is in the details, and we can't always be looking at them, that is why I pass on what I can't control. She comes with references, and was a trucker as well... Has a degree in accounting, and favors working with truckers.......
Since we can't advertise here, if you want more info, PM me.

I'd say the tax liability is minimal compared to the thought of not being able to effectively communicate and run you business by gaining the ability to book profits and control costs .
A TRAC lease which is what SNI offers is 100% deductible it's not a depreciated asset so not need for a ARM table or justified costs because it's 100% along with your Fuel , escrow and Maint fund .. your escrow and maint fund are write offs to your business as its pre tax revenue you do not pay taxes on those funds till you use them and they are then normally accompanied by a receipt which is again a WRITE OFF .
Don't worry so much about the book keeping as,much as you worry about the ability to RUN THE TRUCK and earn a PROFIT .
There are lots,of folks here who can lend assistence to that aspect . The learning process in book keeping is much easier to grasp than the freight booking portion of the job ... keep your receipts of course ... almost everything is,a write off ..
Truck
insurance
iFTA, ( fuel taxes )
Fuel
health care
XM ( weather reports )
Phone
Internet
Maint
escrow
book keeping
tax prep
office supleis ( pens paper , etc )
Much more but that's a good list ... to start
Keep in mind almost everything is a,write off , medication , Co pays , everything is a expense so like I say don't worry so much about that as much as THE JOB at hand ..
Hope this helps -
DO NOT add more to your Maint account than you have to the reason is this . You have to be approved to use that money by the company and you've already contributed the required amount . Your extra is a valuable to you 24/ 7 in your bank account should you need it .
Keep your capital in your pocket as its,the Cash on hand which makes you long term viable when you need it for instance in a years time a,100 a,week is 5200 a,year but if you got I'll or got hurt that 5200 in your bank account can go a ways to help you survive while if you put it in maint your health is not a maint exp.. lol
So just food for thought -

How how much is required in the maintenance fund for your new truck?
What are the pm and tire costs ? And do these need to be done at an approved facility with approved materials ..... Or is it your choice...? -
I just started with Schneider, new 2015 EVO, (did I mention awesome truck?
) My maintenance account cost $135 per week. Not sure about PM costs but my previous truck was about $350 at T/A. If you use a Schneider approved facility the funds come direct from maintenance account. Other outside shops require you to submit the receipt so you can use any shop. As far as I understand you are required to do quarterly inspection at Schneider approve inspection shops, and an annual DOT inspection (I think Schneider pays for these).
Cat sdp Thanks this. -
Maintenance can be done anywhere Paccar approves. Maintenence contributions are taxable they become a deductible once you spend it on maintenance. All SFI trucks require a maintenance fund.
knuckledragger and double yellow Thank this.
