Jar-Head..... You have that right about failing..... Some of the students in our class this week in Charlotte have NO BUIDNESS being in buidness..... They are what keeps the "churn" going in trucking though......

Well on a completely different note...
I can't see it ever being a good idea to run in 9th gear for cruising instead of 10th gear in the Cascadia EVOs that many of you guys are leasing - they're spec'd the same as the company trucks with 10 speed direct transmissions and 2.64 rear gears as far as I know.
There are 10 speeds with an overdrive ratio (<1:1) in the final (10th gear), and 10 speeds that are in direct (1:1) when in 10th gear. SNI orders them with 10 speed direct transmissions. In 9th gear, you aren't in direct... you are in 9th gear.
In 10th gear, you are in direct. Not overdrive.
Looking at the spec sheet from Sadwar's truck, the transmission is an Eaton FRW-15210B. The FRW- transmissions have a 1:1 ratio in 10th gear. If it was an FRO- series transmission, those have a .75:1 ratio in 10th gear and would more commonly be paired with probably 3.55 rear ends instead of the 2.64.
Honestly, the whole direct vs. OD debate really comes down to how your truck is spec'd. For the majority of the trucks out there, the gear to cruise in is going to be the top gear. Some O/O will order trucks with a 13 or 18 speed and taller rear gears in case they really want to haul ***, and in some cases it may be more efficient for them to run in lower gear at normal highway speeds.
I don't listen or read too much into the guys that try to get every MPG out of their truck that they can, so I'm not up on all the exact details. My guess about the "science" behind the direct transmission and tall rear gear ratio being the most fuel efficient is that you are rotating the driveline as slow as possible until the rear end which results in a lower rotating mass and can help with fuel economy. The downside to this is that it is hard on a rear end because a lot of torque is being transmitted all the way through the driveline until it hits the rear end, vs. a lower amount of torque being transmitted at a faster rate with an overdrive transmission and lower-geared (higher numerically) rear end.
TL;DR version:
If you lease a Cascadia EVO from SFI, keep it in 10th gear when you are cruising. -
PLEASE comment on my fixed expenses....... I'm thinking I'm a little higher than most, and I may have some of these mis-labeled....
Variable expenses are fuel, and possibly food.....
