I have enough mechanical knowledge to know when there's an air leak and how to change a marker light, that's about it lol.
Financial reserves? well I have 10K in the bank and very low living expenses... dunno if that's enough or not. Some people jump into this with $300 in the bank.
For example I don't have a car, no kids or wife, not really any debt. My mortgage is $510 a month but I have a room mate giving me $400 a month. I've set everything up to not be tied down to anything as I find it pointless to have big expenses when most my life is in a truck.
I've met an OTR truck driver with a new $40k pick up truck with huge payments on it.. when he just goes home every 6-8 weeks for a couple days. I just don't get that :biggrin_25513:
When I go home I rent a car from enterprise for $10 a day on weekends, plus they pick me up and drop me off at my truck. If that sounds too good true just search "enterprise 9.99"
I'm 25 years old sooo I'm still figuring it all out :biggrin_2556:

Sure it would sound nice to have an extra $400 a week in my pocket with a used truck BUT one tow away breakdown and at the shop for a week I'm in the hole for thousands.
It's tempting though, then again I'm doing this to reduce stress out of my life and enjoy what OTR lifestyle has to offer sooo probably a new truck would give me a more relaxing worry free life.
Again happiness is more important than a few extra dollars.
I appreciate the help to observe all options and think things through. Thanks

FW, I went with a new truck for the piece of mind, while nothings free, even warranty work, it's nice to know you have that warranty behind you. Like you I have few bills, but I would like to make some real money for future plans. Not sure at this point if in 3 years I'll buy this truck, or get a new one. Call it a 350k mile test drive, lol.

freightwipper... Go with your original plan, get the new truck since you will be living in it... At 25, you seem to have your head screwed on right with a good plan that will fit your needs..
You sure post a lot of questions all over this board in such a short amount of time.. Pretty good way to learn instead of watching the boob tube or playing video games..

Leasing a truck on Schneider will give you pretty good experience with picking your freight lanes.. Being able to dispatch yourself is a good way to go over other L/P deals..

Whatever truck you get, make sure and learn all you can to repair it.. Saw too many guys not willing to even get under the truck and lube it while looking for any problems that may develop..

    Good luck...

There's a guy that parks his newer model corvette at the Gary terminal. I wonder why someone would park a 60+ thousand dollar vehicle at that yard, which is either a mud pit or a total dust storm when it's dry. When you get back to your car after a couple weeks theres a thick layer of dirt and dust all over your car. Common sense doesn't always rule the day

Jar-Head.. No since in getting into a pi$$ing match with the others when they pick apart your posts... Ignore them... Otherwise this thread may get locked..

All of us make mistakes when we post... Most will see thru that...

If they want to counter what you post, let them start their own thread with the way they run their business like others do on here...

I think DFO and few others post good threads with their experience, most guys looking into becoming L/O will read their posts too..

Good luck with your new truck... Wish I were still out there but being retired isn't too bad either with a few good memories of my past life..

Helping others is always a good thing, keep it up.....

    Thanks

Yeah I'm all about learning, there's soooooooooooooooo much to learn.
Yet people think being a truck driver is easy, nothing much to learn and they make no money.
    Totally the opposite of that.

I believe people that aren't making any money aren't doing their homework.
Blows my mind there's still experienced drivers out their doing OTR for .32 and less, I know I've met them and even recruited one.
Got a CR England driver earning .29 CPM to join Crete a few months ago, he's now at .44 CPM here.
These drivers working for nothing hurt us all in the end, megas can undercut us because they've got cheap drivers!

    Anyway enough of that rant....

Schneider gives all the tools you need and allows you to pick your runs and do what you want.
They appear to care about you being successful and staying with them.
They give the tools and the freedom.. nowhere else offers all this and %. None of that flat rate mileage garbage, no thanks.
If I wanna run the Northeast I'll at least earn more doing that vs running out west, I appreciate having that ability and choice if I choose.
Through this process I'll learn a lot more, that experience would be helpful if I ever decide to go true O/O.
