Well Im from Baton Rouge , Louisiana & I just finished school & picking a company is really frustrating because of all the stories I hear about how drivers hated working for a company, etc.... I've been leaning more towards Roehl but I hardly ever see them in this area (Baton Rouge,LA) is that a bad thing? plus they only offer OTR positions here (which isn't a problem) but looking a company like Schneider, they have more options to choose from in this area, I just don't like their IDLE POLICY & sleeping in a hot truck is not on my list of things to do. :biggrin_25513:, but its seems like Schneider would be a better company to choose if I wanted to move within the company as far as switching to a regional or dedicated accounts. Which is something I would like to do eventually! So with that being said, would Schneider be a better choice as far as options to choose from & just deal with their policies that many ppl hate ? or should I choose Roehl and enjoy the comfort of the epu/apu & stick with just doing OTR until I get experience a find a local or better company.....?

I know somebody out there had these same worries/questions when they first started out too.... WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I'd go with the APU's probably.

Have you looked at other companies? You're in a good location with I-10 running coast-coast.
Apply with these if they look good and ignore any "experience required" .

    Southeastern Freight Lines
Lowe's - hires for local work
Reinhart Food Service, LLC - home every day
    Frontier Transport - home weekends
    Epes Transport - home weekends
    Martin Brower - home daily

Crete Carrier - dedicated run -
this fleet will run primarily between Zachary, LA to Dallas or Houston, TX, and can expect to be home weekly.

Associated Grocers - home several times a week.
    Saia LTL Freight
ABF Freight - Port Allen terminal
    Midwest-Coast Transport
Navajo Express - APU's and inverters

I'd agree with Chinatown and look at some other options.

SNI's idle policy is no idling between 20 and 70 degrees. If it's anywhere close to 70 the truck will idle. I have never and will never sit and swelter for Chris Lofgrin's bottom line. I ran the truck last night, I'm running it right now, and if I don't make it home tomorrow, I'll run it then. The only downside to the ambient temperature sensors is electrical power during winter.

As for Roehl - in the last two years they've hired a LOT of former Schneider executives. I know one SNI medium wig that joked Roehl would be a perfect company for SNI to buy because their office staff already knows SNI policy and procedure.

Idling in the summer is not an issue with schneider. The only time you might get hot is if the a/c goes out, and you just get it fixed. The problem is more in the winter when you have a hard time idling when it's cold. Batteries don't hold a charge as well in cold weather so if you need to use any electronics other than the bunk heater your batteries probably will run out. But in the summer idling isn't an issue at all.

As far a parking goes you'd probably be based out of reserve, la. We also used to use the tank wash on airline hwy in Baton Rouge but not sure if van drivers can still park there.

One thing though, that would be a good area to run bulk for schneider if you wanted to go that route. Reserve is one of the bigger bulk terminals.

yea, I passed both tanker & hazmat.. I go in for fingerprints & background check next week for the hazmat, & I thought about going tanker with schneider & I also talked to a schneider recruiter about a dollar general account that would have me home weekly, I'm young (21) so I figured rolling those roll crates wouldn't be too bad. But who knows it could be harder than I think. I also may have to take a look at those other companies u mentioned also.

the schneider recruiter came a lot looking for people that wanted to go taker, I heard they have only smooth bore , would that be too much for a new driver?

I don't think so. I ran bulk for a couple of months so I'm not too familiar with it. But it really depends on the product. Loose product like water surges a lot. Really thick product you can't even tell you are hauling a liquid sometimes.

ethos would be the go to guy with questions though since he was a trainer at schneider for a while.
