so tony are you saying you prefer double clutching over floating? I do live up north and haven't seemed to have had problems floating, but as always, I am ready to learn from the experience of others, and others mistakes, I just don't want this to cause me a job oppertunity if I can't seem to catch on to double clutching right away.

Razor ripper, as far as preferring one over the other, I would come down on the side of floating "most" of the time I suspect. I've always just reverted to double clutching on a wet or slippery road as a way of being sure of a good positive shift with out any drag on the tires that have traction...just feels safer to me...If I had to say that its definitely safer, I have no way to back that statement up, other than over 30 years driving behind me when I retired in 2011, with zero accidents. That don't mean I know it all, that means I was really fortunate. I do believe that all new guys/girls should have the ability though, if for nothing else to pass a required road test. You've already got experience driving and believe it or not, that is probably a handicap right now, but once you get the rhythm down, you'll pick it up quick.

Totally how I feel, that all this time floating, and not being trained how to do both is a severe handicap. I am a little disappointed at the Truck Driving School that I whent to for not teaching me this since it seems that all major carriers want you to do this, the school even helped me improve on my floating skills, instead of teaching me how to Double-Clutch. After paying $4000.00 for school I'd say I'm a little dissapointed, cause now it feels like I whent from college back down to pre-school level.

wow... i feel dumb because i double clutch all the time. I once rode with a guy that had a cat engine and i floated it all the time but that truck allowed me to easily. the truck im in now seems to be harder to float to me than the CAT did. plus i run with my jake on so its hard to float with it on

Float them. The schools train you to double clutch. Trainers will usually teach you to float them.

    Well genuis,

all floating is is double clutching without touching the clutch. Double clutch is a rythum shift , floating is the exact same thing. Its all a matter of timing , if you learn how to do it right , you don't have to worry about rebuilding a tranmission or replacing a clutch....... I started on a 5&4 and floated everything the clutch was only for starting and stopping. After you get the feel of the truck you never rub or grind a gear. I still hit them clean........ But then again OLD GUYS RULE!!!!!

Sorry to have set you off jimroy, but I wasn,t looking for a smart A.S response. sorry to have seemingly caused you a coronary, but what i was looking for was some advise. Just to appease you though, thought I'd let everyone know that I can now offically double-clutch, due to the fact that my TE last week had the kindness and patience to make me double- clutch all week with him, been improving on it ever since.

    razor,
my apologies, not sure why i started my reply that way, i always try to be helpful to fellow drivers. Might have been having a bad hair day , and for us old bald guys that can be a doozy of a day....

I do have to admit, i get pretty irritated at some of these truck driving schools. They teach the bare minimums it seems to me and most just teach the skills test at dmv and they charge you 6 times more money than my parents paid for that hospital bill at my birth.... These kids come out of schools and can't shift gears, or can't do a right hand turn without taking half the sidewalk, or many other basic driving or trucking skills.... How many teach how to properly tie down a load or to secure a load.... I'd be willing to bet that 98% of truck school grads can't tie a truckers hitch...

Now i try to pass on all the knowledge i gained in my lifetime, to anyone willing to listen and learn. It just really ticks me off to see people , raping your wallet and taking your money and giving you nothing in return or the only bare minimum and leave you lacking and having to have someone like myself or some of the white knights take their time to teach what you need to know.

Anyway , please accept my apologies again, come join us in the WHITE KNIGHTS OF THE ROAD group , here in truckers report... YOU WILL FIND US UNDER MISC TRUCKING TOPICS/ TRUCKERS IMAGE...There are plenty of excellent people there willing to share their knowledge, and we would be honored to have you join us and be one , who like us is willing to help and teach.

THAT INVITE GOES TO ALL YOU DRIVERS,
THOSE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,,,,,who want to help regain the respect and white knight image we all used to enjoy in this industry. All you need it the desire and willingness to help your fellow driver and your fellow man out on the road....
