Well I actually live about 10 minutes from you in thousand oaks. I run out of Phoenix because Fontana/MiraLoma are not flatbed terminals, although that's where I park the truck when I go home. Yes swift trains new drivers for flatbed.

How much are you on the road? I have two little kids and I want to be home as much as possible. Also what can you tell me about new driver pay scale?

I stay out for quite a while but I'm young/single/no kids. The best area to run with swift flatbed is the eastern triangle between tx,sc,in. It's essentially dedicated freightliner/caterpillar with a steel coil to get us back to TX. And putting in for hometime takes me out of the triangle so I try not to unless I'm super burned out. However we just got a dedicated account hauling glass, running ca/az/ut/wa, so that could get you home more often... or you could just request to stay out west, like I request to stay out east...

As far as the pay scale you can find it here: http://swift.drivers-central.com/swift-transportation/driver-pay.cfm just add 1cpm for flatbed. Also tarp pay is $30, chain pay is $8 I think, additional stop pay is $15, unload pay is $10 for a few accounts, and anywhere from a 1cpm-3cpm quarterly bonus depending on rank.

How long have you been with Swift? Where did you do orientation? How was training? Do they take newbies for those dedicated accounts?

2 years in august, phoenix orientation, training was great, glass account required 6 months exp but none of the other ones do. I will say though that if you go into this banking on a dedicated or getting home weekly then you'll probably be disappointed or unhappy. And if you do get home weekly you will find yourself complaining about the pay because you can't make any money doing that, especially with where you live.

I figured on taking some lumps for my first year or so. Coming form the Military and Finance I am used to long hours and not seeing my family but I want something that provides a good living and a skill. I just want to make around 23k my first year (more if possible). I am currently unemployed as my last employer used me to get their sales team out of the red and then dumped me when the time came to pay me what they promised. I can't fall any lower than I am already.

i would go with Schneider That was my 2nd choice after i graduated trucking school. Ask about their " skid pad " training course ! you will learn alot if they still train new drivers on this course

here is a sample of the training

Schneider tanker pays a great sign on bonus. They will train you, but you have to get your hazmat/tanker endorsements first (they help reimburse). That is a job where you could be home more (mostly on weekend) and makes good money.
