Hey all just a short update on how things are going. Finished my Orientation in West Memphis, AR. on 9-9-11, and just came home for the weekend after two weeks out with my Training Engineer. Doing my SQT on Monday and then should get a truck soon after that and begin driving Nashville, TN. regional.
My experience at orientation was good. Extremely time intensive during that week. Felt like so much information and homework and just barely enough time to do it in.
The motel they had us staying in was by no means the Hilton, but my room was clean and the bed was at least for the most part comfortable. It had a mini fridge and microwave so that helped some too. And I didn't have to share my room with anyone.
My TE on the road was great. A very patient man with a lot of experience and knowledge. He runs the Family Dollar account so I had ALOT of town and back road driving as well as backing into some very interesting situations. The places they plop these stores down at boggles the mind.
Like I mentioned, doing SQT on Monday so heading back to W. Memphis and will post another update once I'm finished with that.
Drive safe and catch you all later.

I'm 60...starting a whole new career OTR...been in an office all my life. I should have my CDL in a few weeks... Ive been around the block a few times, and am looking to join a company that is fair...not looking to be coddled. How did you choose the company you're starting with?
-
I can't answer for Papa. But I can tell you, his choice was a good one.
Schneider has bent over backwards to accommodate me, and that's saying a lot.
I'm not sure what options (driving) they would offer you as a student/new driver. But they offer a long list that can meet almost every need.
I'm 51, and now consider myself semi-retired. Thanks to Schneider. Pay did not have anything to do with that. The ability to run "outside" normal industry standards does it for me. I work 14 on, and 7 off and still make decent money.
One of the drivers I know. Works 4 on, and 4 off. He "officially" retired in November of 2010. But stayed on with the "homerun" program. Which still considers him to be full-time....with benefits.
I give them a big thumbs up for trying their damnedest to accommodate a drivers needs. The Challenger Thanks this. -
I agree you will do a lot worse than Schneider, they've been good to me and my family. you will be hard pressed to find another company that has the freight and network Schneider does. a bit of advice is to make sure you know how to work the qualcom that is your ticket to the miles. good luck and welcome aboard!

Markus, when you are new to the industry Schneider is the way to go. People like to complain about them, but when you move on to other companies, they know you know how to be safe and compliant, also how to deliver loads on time...if you don't do these things, they simply will starve you out. But if you run, don't constantly whine and moan and see it as an adventure...you will have a ball. Heck at 60 years old you never have to work anywhere else. It's all about work ethic, and these days there ain't much of that around.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks guys....I'll give them a call

Hey Papa Lion, I'm on the FD account out of West Memphis. I've been down there a month and a half now. I use to pull out of Maqouketa Iowa.
-
How is it working out of Maquoketa? I live in Davenport and see SNI advertising positions there. I am thinking of going back on the road and the ad makes it look good, but what is it really like? Miles/home time etc. Thanks.
-
Well the home time my TE had out of West Memphis was really good. he made it home for the 10 hour break almost every other day and we were home for the weekend. No lies that it's hard work so you earn that going home break but he was a great trainer.
Hey Cutt, if you were in the OC any during the past month you probably saw me at some point. Feels like I took up residence there LoL.
And as for the update *CHEERS* I passed SQT. Talking with my DBL in the morning and getting set up with a truck. So made it home and spending the evening with the wife and looking forward to tomorrow.
Markus, I chose them because the recruiter took the time to talk with me honestly. Told me the good and bad and promised I would NOT get rich my first year LoL. I did a lot of research on several companies that sent prehires and talked with several company recruiters who were not nearly as open and forthcoming. I had the chance to go to operating centers for a couple companies and talked with people. The attitude of everyone I met at SNI was professional and for the most part pleasant. And to be honest training, beginning pay, and their reputation had alot to do with it as well.BIGDADDYBEAR Thanks this.
