I am an out of work Vet (yeah, I know, El Wah...) Okay, so I am running out of money and at present am pretty near the bottom of the barrel. I found a vet's agency that would pay for the CDL school -- I went to the school, was accepted, was pre-hired by a good enough company-- but the novice councilor I am speaking with is really beginning to change the rules on me. There must not be any set rules to this "grant," if she can so easily undermine what I have done.
The way it worked out, I would be running out of unemployment benefits just as I went into "paid" company training-- that would keep me from totally going under. Now, she said I must go to a cheaper school in December-- I will be jobless with no income-- I don't see how I can even pay for gas to get to school, let alone heat the house or feed myself.
Sorry for the sob story. It is apparent to me that this is not going to work out and I am kicking her aside and going on my own. If I need to go to the cheaper school in December, why not go to the cheaper school in August? Whatever.
This individual also said that I was not free to leave the state or region (something I am planning to do without her permission as I am not a peasant, but an American Citizen and can grab a U-haul and get out any time I feel like it).
I need some sage Wisdom on company operated training, or any way to avoid the first bout of thousand dollar bills. My (civilian) driving record is spotless. I would like to move to the West or the Southwest rather than stay where I am. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, or any of the coast would be nice. Texas, maybe San Antonio sounds good.
Is company sponsered training a bad thing or a good thing?
I am trying to go into this with a good attitude. I have lost everything already, my house, car, pension, health care, savings, all over a tiff I had with my manager (which got me fired). The thought of getting out of Iowa and making some realistic money for the first time is really the only thing that keeps me from depression.
Thanks, Gita

Look at grants as well. They will pay for gas and books. Next thing is if you have nothing to hold you back you might be a canadite for a co sponsered school, since it sounds like you have hit rock bottom anyway. If you go that route look into snidey or watkins shepperd or something like that.

Your county should have a veterans' agent . Talk to him for straight scoop on G.I. educational benefits .

I wish you luck, but if you are already down, trucking may not be the way out for you. Many have been disappointed, to say the least.
I really don't care for company schools, they expect lots of the students while not being committed to the welfare of the people they graduate, just bodies filling seats for the most part, and someone to exploit for a period of time if successful, and to try and get money from if not.
Your Veterans agency may be of help to you as was posted by RickG. -
Also - take a look at the WIA available via the local unemployment agency.
Company schools ARE the weakest link - use only in last resort -
I am not a Recent vet. The GI bill ran out a long time ago for me. I am not allowed into any re-training because I was fired. Being fired here is worse than robbing a store. You end up punished and fined all over. Heck, I allowed myself to be fired because that was the only way to get unemployment.

If its available & an option, look into community college run schools. They're almost always cheaper. Also if you have a company who's interested in hiring you ask them what schools they accept or don't. A lot of companies won't take certain schools.
