I'm interested in Daly's Truck Driving School in Buford, GA and anything you folks have would help me a ton. 90% of my decision is on the location being close enough for me to drive to every day (from Northern Georgia), and 10% is based on the school itself (that sounds strange, but I'm not worried about whether I'll pass or not - I will pass and get my A license).
Thanks for the earlier posts, and it sounds like there's been some good and one bad experience. I feel for anyone that has a bad experience somewhere, and have taken those posts into consideration.
I've got to say that if anyone at the school treats me poorly as a paying customer - we're gonna have a talk - and then we're gonna talk with a moderator. "Treat others as you'd want to be treated yourself" has stuck with me for years, and I'm willing and able to call others to that (worked well in the Army, and has had some effect since).
The grants, work programs, unemployment programs, etc don't apply to me - and I'd like to leave those for folks that need it more than I do. I have no problem paying for training, and with that I expect to get what I paid for. -
Since your prior military, get them topay for it. That is what your grant is for. All that tuition money they got set aside for you, use it and get the CDL for free.
HwyPilot Thanks this. -

Thanks for the postings Cerberus and 1989 Pete, I appreciate the info. I used up most of my ACF (Army College Fund), and then the rest expired 10 years after I left in '95. I'll ask the VA if they've got anything left for me that I can apply for - pretty sure I exhausted that in trade school. Too bad I don't have the time to wait for a VoTech school, Community College, etc. - I need to hit the road as soon as possible, train up with a company and then switch to owner/ operator - otherwise my truck will rot.
Anyone have the fast track on running as an owner operator? Shortest route I've found so far requires 3 months solo OTR, which means I could roll freight sometime about 7 to 8 months from now as an O/O. I know heavy equipment, and that's along time for a truck to sit on shore power at the house. The truck was bought as a team ride, and then the policy changed 3 months before I got the unit. Now I have to get my own training, and my buddy can't lease on my truck - Dohhhh! -
Call Stephanie at Daly's and tell her what you want to do. I didn't want to wait for a new quarter to start at tech school either so I just paid the money out of pocket and got my CDL. I now work for a large freight company and make pretty good pay.
Some companies will reimburse you for school cost. Not sure how it all works but ask when you are interviewing for a job.
I realize that not everyone can pay for school out of pocket and it is a a lot of money but I'm glad I did it. Daly's was a blast.
As for O/O. A few guys at wok used to have their own trucks and say that now is the worst time to be an O/O.
